Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Global Awareness

Since I studied French in high school, I decided to continue learning the language during my time here at Ohio State. I have learned so much about the language and culture that I wasn’t able to learn in high school, and it has given me a broader view of not only France, but the whole world. Studying francophone cultures has opened my eyes to different customs and traditions. This has allowed me to see the world from a different perspective; I have a much better understanding of differences among people within our country and around the globe. It has also inspired me to travel, and I now have a strong desire to visit other countries either through study abroad programs or on my own time.

Original Inquiry

Although I do not intend to do research within my field, I believe that original inquiry is an important aspect of the educational experience that can be seen in ways other than through research. I have been forced to think outside the box in each of my classes this semester, and even though it didn’t lead to original inquiry, it is a skill that can eventually get me there.

Academic Enrichment

I am planning on majoring in Actuarial Science and Mathematics with a minor in Economics. Pursuing these routes will help me achieve my goal of becoming an actuary with a strong foundation in different aspects of the field. I am majoring in math because I have always enjoyed mathematics, and it is the one subject that I have never felt that I have gotten to learn enough about. I want to minor in economics because I find it interesting, and I would like to learn about the underlying concepts that I didn’t get to learn about in my introductory courses. In order to get a rigorous, well-rounded education, I plan on taking the honors versions of my remaining general education courses. By studying more extensive coursework, I am committing myself to being a better student and, thus, a better future employee in the workforce.

Leadership Development

I am involved in the Bradley-Paterson Hall Council as the Black Student Association (BSA) Representative. I help share information about the BSA’s events to our residents in order to promote an appreciation of diversity throughout the residence hall and campus. I also help plan and attend hall council programs. I also have a job at Marketplace on Neil. Since starting there, I have learned a lot about teamwork and communicating with coworkers and customers, which I know will serve me well in the future. These experiences have helped me become better at working with other people toward a shared goal, therefore helping me become a stronger leader.

Service Engagement

As a member of the Bradley-Paterson Hall Council Executive Board, I have not only helped serve the residents in my residence hall, but I have participated in other service projects as well. I am not involved in an ongoing service project, but I would like to find one that I am interested in and participate because service is very important to me. Being from California, adjusting to a new environment hasn’t been easy, and I feel that participating in service has and will continue to allow me to become a larger part of my new community.
