GOALS

Reflection on the G.O.A.L.S.

  1. Global Awareness: In order to achieve this goal, I will inquire about and embrace cultures other than mine through conversations and current events. On a more academic scale, however, I will explore different cultures through my coursework, especially the German film class, concentrated on the Holocaust. Furthermore, I plan to travel abroad, whether through a mission trip or through study abroad. Keeping an open mind to other people’s ways of life is essential in gaining insight into a view outside of my own.
  2. Original Inquiry: In order to achieve this goal, I plan on taking advantage of the research opportunities available at Ohio State. Although I’m not particularly interested in a career in research, I believe it will be valuable to gain experience in the research field for future employment. Additionally, my Academic Plan includes advanced coursework which will be helpful to gain graduate level experience with knowledgeable professors who can help me advance in my field.
  3. Academic Enrichment: I will use my Academic Plan to pursue a program of study that adheres to my specific interests in both Psychology as well as Speech and Language. While I am not yet certain that my interest is worthy of a minor in Speech and Language, the opportunity to take a few classes in this dedication will be advantageous in deciding this query. As a history fan, I am excited in my selected GE’s of German 3254H and English 2280H, relating to the Holocaust and the Bible respectively. I am interested to learn more than what my major holds and travel back in time to experience the years preceding me. Through my coursework, I hope to gain a well-rounded education that will also aid me in discovering a field of study for which I am passionate.
  4. Leadership Development: In order to gain leadership skills applicable to the broader world, I plan to get involved around campus in various clubs and organizations. Thus far in my career here at OSU I have joined clubs ranging from the sports students section of Block O, to student government opportunities on the Lincoln Activities Board, to a faith community through RealLife. Each of these organizations attributes to my different interests and I am looking forward to the leadership opportunities and community atmosphere each one offers. In the upcoming semesters, I plan to get involved in Greek Life here at Ohio State where involvement and networking possibilities can connect me with future opportunities.
  5. Service Engagement: Volunteering has always been a large part of my life so I look forward to continuing this aspect throughout my years here at OSU. While I am currently involved in Blood Drives and BuckeyeThon, I want to reach out to the greater Columbus area as a whole, possibly becoming involved in food shelters or disability care. As a member of the Community Service Committee in LAB, I am able to participate in events like food drives and fundraisers but I hope to broaden this scope as the year goes on. In addition to LAB’s community service, I plan on getting involved in sorority philanthropy as well. Through service engagement I hope to be able to give back to the community that I am fortunate enough to call home during the school year.

Year in Review

Looking back at the goals I created during my first semester of Sophomore year, it’s fascinating to see some of my dreams are still so similar, but others have changed drastically.

  1. Global Awareness: Living and learning in a school community that is so diverse, I have had the opportunity to get to know different people and cultures outside of my own. This experience has been so meaningful as I have exposed and shut down my own stereotypes through personal relationships, coursework, and life experiences and even grown more globally aware. I am so excited at the opportunity to travel abroad to the Philippines in May of 2018 and experience a whole new kind of culture there as well. I am eager at the opportunity to help children in poverty and learn how they live their lives with such positive outlooks.
  2. Original Inquiry: Freshman-year me had the bold idea to get involved in research, even recognizing my disinterest with a career in the experimenting world. In this respect, I have not gotten involved in any research labs, but I have partaken as a subject in a couple of studies, attempting to do my part in aiding to the scholarly realm. Still, I have very much enjoyed learning about the different psychological concepts discovered through research. Maybe participating in a research lab is still attainable during my academic career.
  3. Academic Enrichment: I am indeed pursuing areas that I am passionate about: majoring in Psychology and minoring in Speech and Hearing Science with a focus in Speech Pathology. I have gained a well-rounded education in many areas from European Women’s History to Calculus to Biology, rounding it out with some honors and non-honors courses.
  4. Leadership Development: In the past year, I have gained leadership skills through clubs and organizations around campus that I had not foreseen as a first semester freshman. I am in a sorority, which presents numerous opportunities for leadership, and I lead a small group associated with RealLife in my sorority. Furthermore, I am on the executive board for a club called Face the Children, where I serve as Secretary. These opportunities have helped me develop professionalism, engage with my fellow club members and superiors, and grow more confident in my ability to lead.
  5. Service Engagement: I am involved my sorority’s philanthropy, Girls on the Run, raising money and cheering on elementary schoolers during the organization’s 5k. Additionally, my club, Face the Children, raises funds and awareness for street children in the Philippines. I am so excited for the opportunity to serve abroad in the Philippines through this club. Lastly, I am part of 4Paws for Ability, which trains and raises service dogs for children and veterans with disabilities. These experiences have impacted me, helping me realize my passion for helping others and also supplying vibrance from those I get the privilege to serve.
