Project 8 – Memory Collage

A few years back, a friend of mine got a summer job at Yellowstone National Park, so a group of us decided to make a road trip of it and drive him to Wyoming. We’re all getting older and moving away, so this was one of the last times that we would all be together, especially for an extended length of time. Yellowstone is a beautiful park, but I didn’t enjoy the trip so much because of the scenery but because of the people I was with, and the celebration of how far we’d come. Our last night, on the way back, we stayed in the house of some relative of a guy on the trip in Middle-of-Nowhere, North Dakota. This collage is that night, when we stayed up late into the night playing pinball and drinking soda.

Project 7 – Planes in Space

Above is my planes in space drawing. I’m quite happy with how this turned out; it was exactly as I intended. This was the first project in which I used color. I think this was a very good introduction to color because my aim wasn’t photo realism. I could color my planes without worrying about if it matched reality, giving me some leeway in that department.

Below is a picture of the under drawing and a picture of the initial concept sketch.

Project 5 – Interior Perspective With Value

My living room, in charcoal.

I wanted to give charcoal drawing a try. Here are some takeaways:

  1. It’s difficult to control value. I often had to erase large portions of my work because I darkened it too much. A lot of objects had to be rendered. The lamp shade is a prime example of this.
  2. Precision when shading is hard to maintain. I think a lot of this had to do with my blending technique, though. For most of the project, I used a tissue wrapped around my finger. Maybe using a blending stump would have made this process a lot easier.

Project 4 – Interior Perspective

My drawing for Project 4 is of my apartment bedroom. I probably spend most of my time sitting here, either working at my computer or practicing piano, a hobby of mine. I sat in a small camp chair while drawing this, so my viewpoint is only slightly above the desk surface, which, in reality, doesn’t come up to my waist. Because of my low vantage point, the view outside my window is exclusively sky.

One point of trouble I encountered when drawing was that my vanishing points where in suboptimal positions.

Ultimately, I had to tape four pages together to capture them. This forced me to use the two pages joined lengthwise shown in the setup picture above to correctly align edges to the vanishing points. It proved to be a hassle, but I’m satisfied with the image it produced.

Project 1 – Still Life Contour Drawing

I chose a kitchen theme for my still life drawing. The scene includes a bread pan, wooden spoon, kitchen towel, bag of flower, win bottle, and cutting board, with tiling in the background. A picture of the setup can be seen below, along with various sketches of the scene.

The picture above shows preliminary sketches of the objects in various configurations. Below is a final sketch before drawing commenced.
