Weekly reflection 4/1-4/3

Problem solving is a step-wise process to determine the best solution to a problem situation. Throughout our lives we are going to experience problems and it is our job to solve them. We usually cause our own problems just by failing to plan out things or being ignorant and not using our common sense. It is always important to remain optimistic and that the problems we face and how we deal with those problems is what makes us in the end. I know for a fact that a lot of my problems could be solved if I did not procrastinate. But for some reason I have not learned my lesson yet and maybe that is because I perform better when I am under pressure. There are many ways to solve problems and we must know how to solve them effectively and sometimes that requires trial and error.

weekly reflection 3/25-3/27

For this week we talked about time management and investing and spending. Many of us say we do not have enough hours in the day to accomplish everything we need to do but often times we waste hours in the day when they could have been used to do something productive. However, I also believe that time enjoyed being waste is not wasted time. We all need time to relax and de-stress so we do not get burnt out. We also did the m&m activity where we placed the m&ms on the things that we spend most of our time on and mine was spent mostly on work and sleeping. It definitely put things in perspective because we only had 24 m&ms to represent 24 hours of the day and I did not have enough m&ms to fill in things like spending time with family and friends. I definitely need to work on balancing my life more. We also watched the jelly bean video that talked about how many days/hours/ months we will spend in our life doing certain activities like sleeping or working. I thought this video was really crazy but awesome because at the end there were hours left over and the video maker asked viewers what they would do with those hours left over. I think it is very important that we are productive human beings and take care of our responsibilities but I also find it important that we find time to do the things that we enjoy and to relax and enjoy life and not take it so serious sometimes.

weekly reflection 3/18-3/20

Transactional leadership is a tradition approach. This leadership involves an exchange between leaders and followers and there is usually a reward for good behavior and a disincentive for bad behavior. Transformational leadership involved motivational and ethical leaders. There is also Laissez Faire leadership which is ineffective and there really is a lack of leadership. I have definitely worked for all of these different leadership styles and because of that it has really made me appreciate when I am under the reigns of a good leader.

Emotional intelligence involves having self awareness, social awareness, self management, and relationship management. It is important to have a balance of all four to live a happy and healthy life.

weekly reflection 3/4-3/6

There are many different kinds of power and each one can be used in different situations. As a leader, it is important to be aware of your power and to not abuse it. Great leaders know when to use the organizational powers of legitimate, reward, coercive, referent, and expert and when not to use them. As a leader it is your job to empower and motivate others but each individual you lead is motivated different. Some people are motivated more by rewards, while others are motivated more when you have a personal relationship with them and you are very experience and knowledgeable in your field of work. It is important to know which powers work best because the overall goal is to get the job done safely and effectively.

When it comes to communication, this is one of the most important things that a leader must know how to do properly. Communication may sound like an easy thing to do but often times messages can be confusing and when things are not stated clearly, things can get out of hand. It is also important to have a proper tone in your voice because when you say something, sometimes it comes out sounding mean or rude when that was not your intent at all. Great leaders communicate effectively and have an open communication system with their followers. Communication also involves body language and listening. Always listen and be approachable so your followers know they can always come and talk to you.

STAR pg 89

Situation- explain the environmental context and circumstances that contributed to the miscommunication.

1. Interning for Fan Experience & Promotions through the OSU athletic department and miscommunication was due to the lead intern not clearly stated instructions.

Task- explain your involvement in the miscommunication.

2. As an intern it was my job to perform specific tasks at sporting events that were asked of me and this particular instance involved getting kids in the stands involved in rally lines for the OSU women’s volleyball game. The kids had to stand in a specific way on a specific spot on the court and needed to be directed on and off the court in a fast yet effective manner before the game started. Because the lead intern did not explain himself clearly, myself and the other intern were confused on where exactly to put the kids and at what time to direct them on and off the court.

Action- describe what you did to react/overcome the miscommunication.

3. This situation stressed me out because due to lack of communication, things didn’t run as smoothly as they should have and I felt embarrassed. As interns we use walkie talkies to communicate back and forth so I radioed the lead intern over to help out with the situation.

Result- explain what happened as a result of the miscommunication.

4. As a result, things got quite hectic and confusing but since I radioed the lead intern, it didn’t become a complete disaster

Weekly Reflection 3/20

So last week we talked about miscommunication and listened to the Uncle Kracker song, Follow Me. This song is one I’ve heard many many times and I always thought it was about him being in love with a woman. However, when discussed in class, some people thought it was about drugs and the thought of it being about drugs honestly blew my mind because I never would have thought of that. It just goes to show that we can interpret things differently and unless something is specifically stated, it’s easy to be misguided and misread things.

Weekly Reflection/What motivates me 3/8

On Thursday when we did the three different experiments with different manager styles I honestly at first thought the experiment was stupid because I was confused on what the point of it was. But once it was over and you explained, I completely understood why we did it and think it was a great idea to show us the different types of managers and who we would want to work for. I think all of us dream about making lots of money but should we risk our happiness for wealth? Money does not buy happiness and I rather enjoy my low paying job and be happy with my life than stuck at a high paying  miserable job and have a miserable life.

As far as what motivates me, my parents and my “old self” motivate me. All my life my parents have struggled and lived paycheck to paycheck and their struggles make me more motivated to get an education and find a career where I’m happy and make a decent living. Despite their struggles and setbacks, they have never given up and that motivates me to keep going no matter how badly I want to quit and breakdown. My “old self” motivates me as well and what I mean by that is that in high school I used to weigh 40 lbs more than I do now. I look back at old pictures of myself and get so mad that I let myself spin out of control but I am also very proud of the fact that I have changed my lifestyle by working out regularly and eating healthy and have kept up with this lifestyle for the past 5 years.

Weekly Reflection and Personal Crest 2/9

This week we discussed the leadership traits of charisma, confidence, sociability, intelligence, integrity, and determination which i thought was very interesting, especially the reasons why people organized them from most important to least important. I believe charisma should be first because you have to be bubbly and energetic for people to want to listen to you. After charisma is confidence because you have to have the confidence in order to be able to lead a group and you have to have confidence in your ability and skills as a leader. Sociability is next because does anybody know a successful leader who is not social? You must also be intelligent and be quick on your feet because things can go wrong very quickly and you need to know how to fix them as quickly as possible. Leaders should always have integrity and be honest because so many people are looking up to them. Leaders should lead by example and practice what they preach. The reason I have determination last is because although it is very important to have goals and be motivated, you have to have the confidence, social skills, and intelligence to implement your ideas and reach your goals.

Weekly Reflection 2/1

When we discussed the 6 Pillars of Character in class, I really think that Positivity should be one of the pillars. I’ve encountered so many negative people in my life who never have anything good to say or never seem to have a good day and it makes me wonder how can someone  live a life like that. Being a positive leader is extremely important and I believe people respect you much more when you are positive. I currently am in a job where my team leader is very optimistic and positive and it because of this, I enjoy going into work every day and the optimism and positivity has rubbed off on me and has made me grow substantially.
