Artifacts- Major Service Project

Major Service Project:

1.I was involved with the Columbus Speech and Hearing office from December 2015-present. My involvement with this organization began when I learned everything about their department because of my sororities involvement with them. Delta Zeta supports the Columbus Speech and Hearing people as one of our local philanthropies. I became involved by volunteering my time there spending time with the child patients. I first started out just by dropping off donations and crafts we made throughout recruitment, but then I looked into general volunteering there and stayed ever since.

2. As a result of this experience, I have learned about myself that I take hearing for granted majorly. I also learned about myself that I enjoy babysitting a lot more than I had in the past. I found it was a lot easier working with the patients than i thought also, i had the idea in my head that because they had speech and hearing problems that we would not be able to communicate at all. However, that was the opposite of my experience. I realized we could communicate on another human level besides just talking to each other out loud. We played games, we danced, we learned all about each other’s worlds, just by being in each other’s presence.

3. The positive change to the community as a result of my service experience has come from my representation of the Columbus speech and hearing through Delta Zeta promotion and food events. By getting the word out to the gigantic greek community at Ohio State about the wonderful organization that is Columbus Speech and Hearing, that I think is the best way the community can benefit from my service. I can teach people about the current risks facing hearing today and warn them of potential noise-induced hearing loss problems.

4. While working at the Columbus Speech and Hearing Center, I also had the opportunity to work with the Miracle Ear Hearing aid company, interestingly enough, the same company that my sister Claire Motz, a marketing graduate from Miami University, works for. I had the opportunity to discuss with the Miracle Ear CEO about taking the Columbus Speech and Hearing Center to the next level of service opportunities. Through Claire, I was able to contact some major contributors that are now on board with the Columbus Speech and Hearing center, who now is expanding into Cincinnati, Ohio, the HQ of Miracle Ear Network.

5. Because of this service project, I am better fit to declare my future plan regarding health and business. By becoming involved small in the Columbus Speech and Hearing Center, I was able to volunteer my way starting from the youngest patients up to their contributors and sponsorship office. From there, I was able to use my connections with family from Cincinnati in the Miracle Ear Company to get more funding and sponsorship for The Columbus Speech and Hearing. It is hard for me now to decide which I’d rather pursue, business or health care.

Year in Review

Who were you at the beginning of your time as a Health Sciences Scholar and who are you now?  Did you meet your initial expectations for your first two years?  What do you plan to do for the remainder of your OSU experience? My year in review: 2015-2016.

At the beginning of my time here as an HSS scholar, I was a freshman forcing myself to fit the mold. I felt out of place a lot of the time because all of my peers were enrolled in Chem and Biology classes, yet I di not have the math grades to be able to take either of them right away. I felt disconnected. I did not see myself being able to apply to medical school whatsoever because i felt so behind. It was hard for me to connect with other people simply because they were shocked that I was not planning on going to medical school. I have met my expectations of the first two years as a college student yes, however. The past year I have gotten a new job, one that is significantly better than my old job. I have applied to the Fisher college of business, which is now ranked 14th on the best Undergraduate business programs in the US. I’ve become the Vice President of my sorority Delta Zeta. I work there as the Vice president of membership and recruitment. I have also run the Pink Out at Ohio State T-shirt logistics for the 2015 football homecoming game. So yes, I have been extremely busy this past year. I have gone from being a student with not a lot of college leadership experience to a veteran exec board member of a sorority on campus. It feels great coming this far. I know I am only half way done, but i plan on getting a business degree and be able to apply to PA school after graduation.

I have stayed in touch with my friends from HSS a lot as well. I was able to attend several events this semester as well. For the remainder of my OSU experience, I plan on only making myself happy and caring about what I want to do for the rest of my life. I need to stay involved with the friends I’ve made from HSS and make sure I continue to keep up my grades for Fisher and PA school in the future.

H-G.O.A.L.S.

Health and Wellness: For this aspect of the H-Goals, I attended a Health and Safety Orientation for my study abroad program coming up in May. At this orientation, we discussed ways to stay healthy while abroad and ways to make sure I am safe the entire time. I scheduled a Travel Consultation appointment with the Wilce student health center to make sure I am up to date on all my vaccines.

Global Awareness: I recently applied for a study abroad program to Australia thorough the college of Humanities and Environmental Sciences and I got accepted. The program is a 3.5 week long trip in May to Queensland, Australia to explore the Great Barrier Reef, Tablelands and mountains. I chose to partake on this amazing journey to expand on my appreciation for adventure, nature, service to others, and learning about sustaining human environments in other countries that I normally would not be able to travel to on my own.

Original Inquiry: In terms of original ideas and research, I have piloted a new committee for my sorority’s recruitment. I have come up with an idea to have 1-2 girls per round of recruitment to act as an extension of myself. The main goal of these chairs is to allow the events of recruitment to have 100% of someone’s attention throughout the year, rather than me spreading myself thin over millions of little details I have to plan.

Academic Enrichment: I chose the Fisher college of business as an undergrad college to get my major in while at OSU. It ties into the leadership I want to have in my future endeavors, which as of right now I don’t know what those will be. I am taking the Business intro core classes along with the remainder of my GE’s to be able to graduate in 4 years. I am also taking some science classes on the side and in the summers to stay up to date on all my required pre-requisites to apply to PA school later.

Leadership development: I have become a leader in my sorority again, by being the Vice President of Membership and recruitment. My leadership style is one that humbly inspires people to be their best and to be passionate about their work. I was chosen to serve on an exec board that meets and presents to the entire chapter each week to discuss our current membership and recruitment updates. My jobs include running and planning the logistics of our recruitment process for next year and keeping our totals up to par.

Service Engagement: Being in my sorority we do a lot of service work with the children at Nationwide in their Speech and Hearing department. Our national philanthropy is speech and hearing and All our service hours and dollars raised goes to benefit the Nationwide hospital, the Galluadete university, and Columbus Speech and Hearing center downtown.  I plan to continue my involvement in service to these groups my hopefully getting an internship in their HR departments or their non-profit sectors.

Informational Interview and Major Service Project

johwilc

I selected Johanna Friend-Dipiro as my individual for interviewing. I selected her to pick her brain about being a Physician assistant at Ohio State’s Wilce Student Health Center. I wanted someone who was involved in a field of medicine I am interested in and someone who would always be around to schedule an appointment with if i had further questions. I have always been interested in becoming a PA and eventually continuing on to work at a dermatology office.

The major expectations for her role include daily appointments with patients, giving allergy shots, and doing all things a PA in a general practitioner office would do without an MD. At this particular office, Johanna did things like diagnoses, and other things a PA does. As opposed to a dermatology specialist office where a PA would specialize in all things related to Dermatology.

Johanna prepared for this role by going to nursing school in her undergrad, and also taking several science classes that allowed her to be able to apply and become a PA. She went through about 2.5 years of PA school and now is working all around Ohio State as a PA.

Johanna had a lot of insight to let me in on. She knew all there was to know about the restrictions PA’s have in their practice in Ohio and that some states are much more lenient than others. She also reminded me that being in the medical field is a thankless job, and often times it goes unnoticed. She feels she was able to have a family, spend time raising her children, be able to practice medicine on regular patients, and fulfill her life goals of health care. After our meeting, I looked into he Health Sciences Major program classes that I still needed to take to be able to graduate. But then, I had second thoughts about majoring in something like Health Science, being that it doesn’t mean much if I dont get into grad programs. I also really enjoy being in the business school and I feel it will allow me to stand out in the pools of applicants.

About Me

DSC_0662My name is Lillie Motz and I am a sophomore at Ohio State studying Business Undecided. I am in Health Sciences Scholars because I have an interest in the health care field, particularly dermatology, PA and health care administration. As a learner, I study best by writing out all of my information on a large chalk board and reviewing with flash cards. I tend to do well with teaching other people as well. I think what I want  out of college is the ability to specialize in an area that allows me to help people, teach them, and use my enterprising and social skills to the best of my ability.
