Contribution of Genetics to Oral Bacterial Transmission from Mothers to Babies: a Study of Biologic and Adoptive Mother-Child Dyads

2

We are conducting a study to determine how normal oral bacteria are acquired in young children, and how they might be passed from parent to child. Understanding more about this will help us figure out how we might improve the oral health of all children. We think that bacteria might be less likely to be passed from an adoptive mother to her baby since she is not a genetic match to her child. In this study we will compare adoptive mother-child pairs and biologic mother-child pairs to see how closely the bacteria of each set of mothers match those of their children.

WHERE

The study will be conducted at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. A team of researchers from the two institutions will be conducting the study. The study has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, an agency of the federal government.
