Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

I hope to become very aware of global issues and aim to understand different cultures during my time at Ohio State. During my first semester I have taken a Cultural Anthropology class in order to become a more well rounded individual and attempt to learn how cultures develop and why people around the world behave the way they do. In the next couple of years, I plan to study or serve abroad in order to get a more holistic perspective on the world and the problems we face.

A personal goal I have for my life is to either continue or start my own service-learning/community oriented organization. Because I have this as a goal, I plan to take several upper-level leadership classes, as well as some social entrepreneurship classes within the Fisher College of Business. Through this high-intensity classes, I hope to learn more about issues we face and formulate my own plan to combat and ultimately defeat them.

I plan to challenge myself while I am here at Ohio State, and one of those challenges will entail more rigorous academic curriculum. To do this, I will apply to be on an honors track within the Fisher College of Business. To challenge myself outside of the classroom, I plan to study abroad as an upperclassman. This will push me outside of my comfort zone, and open myself up to a plethora of new opportunities and experiences.

I am dedicated to developing both my own leadership skills and those around me. I currently intern for the iBELIEVE Foundation, which is a non-profit dedicated to developing leadership in underprivileged students of Appalachia. I myself was a kid fortunate enough to attend their summer leadership workshop, so I know the impact that a camp like this can have. As I stated earlier, I will be taking leadership classes here at Ohio State to compliment the experiences I already have.

Through my involvement within the Mount Leadership Society Scholars program, I have already partaken in community service at least once each month while being at Ohio State. I will continue this trend, and even after I complete my two years with Mount, I will still be volunteering for the Columbus community at least once a month because I recognize the importance of service, and I know that I will get as much out of it as those that I serve.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

My Grandfather’s All-District Basketballs

I keep these artifacts on my desk for a couple of reasons. For one, I keep it as a reminder of what kind of person I aspire to be. Although I never personally met my grandfather, I learned through stories of him that he was a standout guy. My grandmother told me that he was very good at basketball, good enough to receive a scholarship to play at Murray State. However, he decided to decline playing in order to focus on his academics. He always valued his education, enough so that he would decline the scholarship money that came with playing because he knew he wouldn’t be able to balance his time enough to excel how he wanted. Although he turned down playing, the coach kept his scholarship offer, even though he wouldn’t be playing, because he wanted my grandfather to be around the players. He wanted him to be around the players because of how respectable and admirable my grandfather was. I aspire to be as good of an individual as him, and this artifact reminds me to work hard at my academics, prioritize well, and to hold true to my values.

About Me

My name is Jordan and I am a first year student at The Ohio State University. I am a member of the Mount Leadership Society Scholars, and a Fisher College of Business Direct student. My Scholars Program focuses on service leadership. Community service and helping others is a deep passion of mine, stemming from my involvement in Leo Club, a service organization which I was the president of in high school. I am also heavily involved in The iBELIEVE Foundation, an organization that provides the youth of the Appalachian Region, like myself, with the opportunity to gain leadership skills. I am currently an Intern for the foundation.

As of right now, I am unspecialized in business. However, I plan to specialize in Finance and Operations Management. I also want to minor in Social Entrepreneurship. My goal is to either start or continue an organization that focuses on improving social issues. People are my #1 priority, and helping them is my passion. I am looking forward to what my journey at Ohio State holds in store.
