Welcome to my Honors & Scholars e-Portfolio

Hello and welcome to my ePortfolio! My name is Owen Morse and I will use this ePortfolio for keeping track of my college activities. I will be putting in experiences of mine that hold large importance to me and can hold large importance in the future.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

STEM EE Scholars is a program at The Ohio State University that I am very proud to be a part of, and I would not wish to trade my experiences from it for anything in the world. The STEM EE Scholars program is based on The Ohio State University Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S., which stand for Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. I believe that what I’ve accomplished through the STEM EE Scholars program relates to every part of G.O.A.L.S., but I believe when it comes to personal matters, I think that Academic Enrichment and Original Inquiry have been the bigger part of my experiences and will affect me the most in the future.

Academic Enrichment should be an important part in anybody’s college career, major, or lifestyle. My whole life I have attempted to find any opportunity I could in order to increase my academic knowledge. I have always pushed myself to be the best student that I can be, no matter the cost. When I came to Ohio State and first joined STEM EE Scholars, I did not know what was coming, but I found that many other people, like myself, were attempting to academically enrich themselves as much as I am. Ohio State is a competitive college, and getting jobs can certainly be competitive as well, which is why it is super important of me as an engineer, especially, to push myself to the limit and see how I can become an achiever in anything academically.

I believe that Original Inquiry is an especially important facet of G.O.A.L.S. for the STEM fields because a lot of what makes up science, math, technology, and engineering comes from a question that must be answered through research. I hope that I will be conducting research at The Ohio State University in the near future because it involves asking questions and finding ways to come to a conclusion, which is one of the fundamentals of the STEM fields. STEM EE Scholars has helped me getting to know about research topics and the people associated with it through the interview project, in which we had to interview a professor that had conducted research. Personally, I have a better understanding now of how to get into doing research at Ohio State, which I think is something that can really build a good résumé when applying for jobs or internships.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. COSI

When I joined STEM EE Scholars, I had no idea what I was getting myself involved with. However, I’m very happy to learn all the exciting activities and organization I’ll be able to be involved with through STEM EE Scholars. For my community involvement through STEM EE Scholars, I’m very pleased that I will be volunteering at COSI. I’ve loved going to COSI ever since I could remember; there’s so much to learn about science and technology. It’s extremely possible that my visits to COSI as a child brought me into a STEM related major, which is why I’m so glad to be a part of it. I can’t wait to teach kids interesting concepts and get them pulled into the amazing world of science that I love. I have yet to volunteer, but I know that I will be extremely happy since I was once a child much like the children that I will be demonstrating concepts of science to.

Hopefully, this experience will make me think about my young self just exploring a whole new world, and science, yet again, will capture my amazement. I know if I ever rethink my decision to join a STEM major, I can visit COSI and realize yet again why I wanted to do it in the first place. Hopefully I can convey all of my feelings about science and technology to the young children that I work with at COSI in the coming weeks.

Intramural STEM EE Scholars Flag Football

Image result for college flag footballOriginally, I joined the STEM EE Scholars intramural flag football team for the long term commitment requirement, but it turned in to something more than just that. When I was younger, around nine years old, I played flag football. I played until I was about eleven when I started playing tackle football. Throughout high school, I stopped playing football really because I chose to do drumline. I had forgotten how much fun football was until this school year when my friends and I joined the STEM EE Scholars flag football team. My favorite part about this team is that I grow closer to my friends, and we don’t really care about winning as long as we are having fun, which we always are. We have yet to win a game, but we really don’t care. It truly is stress-relieving to go out on to the field and just play football like I did when I was younger.

Although I definitely have the time of my life out on the field, I also have gained some valuable knowledge and wisdom from being in such an amazing and fun team. I learned especially that you don’t have to necessarily win to be successful. Although we have not won at all, I feel like this team has been a success in other ways. For example, we are all really good friends now, we all have a better understanding of what good sportsmanship is, and we are stress-relieved. In conclusion, I would not give up this experience and the lessons it has taught me.

About Me

Hello, my name is Owen Morse and I am from Marysville, Ohio, just a short drive from THE Ohio State University. I’m currently an Undeclared Engineering student after having interests in math and science in high school. At my high school, I tried to be as social as possible while achieving academic greatness. For instance, I won Homecoming King while also winning the award for Most Outstanding Math Student. I was involved in band, show choir, physics club, the yearbook club, and many musicals. During my free time at OSU I enjoy hanging out with friends and experiencing new things. I hope STEM EE Scholars helps me make connections that will be helpful when I graduate and am ready to get a job. I hope to learn a lot through Ohio State so I am ready as could be to become an engineer that companies would want to hire.
