Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness – one of my goals this academic year is to develop my knowledge of other cultures, people, and practices. One of the benefits attribute to Ohio State’s size is the diversity of its students. I had never experienced that before in my community. I want to get involved in an organization like Engineers Without Borders or study abroad likely during my sophomore year.  This goal of mine is closely aligned with the service engagement component; the best way dissolve differences and appreciate another group of people is by helping them in any way. This doesn’t mean I have to book the next flight to Zanzabar and become culturally enveloped. I can commit to tutoring children from the Somali district of Columbus one weeknight, even though a service trip is the ultimate goal. The most daunting barrier to this is the cost and time.

Original Inquiry – One of my hopes over the next four years is the opportunity to conduct research. As important as it is to learn the material, the chance to produce tangible applications of the material excites me. I hope to research something in the mechanical engineering discipline, preferably something thermodynamics related. I think that having a research experience under my belt will be extremely beneficial in applying to jobs out of college, or applying for graduate school.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. The above link is a presentation given to my GES seminar. It discusses the means of producing hydrogen for a variety of different functions, most notably the need for hydrogen in fuel cells used in transportation and energy storage. The current means of producing hydrogen on a large scale include wind power, thermolysis of methane in a solar reactor, and biofuels, among others. Some of these sources generate the energy used to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen components, a process known as electrolysis. The notoriety of hydrogen as a future, alternative fuel source stems from its high energy capacity, which is in fact greater than any other substance. Hydrogen production was worth researching because it is a green, sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, and the technology is adolescent, with only vast room to be improved.

About Me

I am a second year student studying mechanical engineering.  I grew up in Westerville, OH, about 20 miles northeast of Columbus. I am involved in Buckeye Current, GIVE Volunteers, and GrOSU at Ohio State. A few of my professional passions include artificial intelligence, space exploration, autonomous vehicles. I plan to be the second generation to graduate from Ohio State in my family. I worked at Vertiv (formerly Emerson Network Power) the previous summer, expanding my knowledge in C++ (VBA), and psychrometrics in the HVAC industry. After earning my undergraduate degree I aspire to work and attend graduate school in Boston, MA. I enjoy traveling, running, photography and maker projects.
