Module 7 – Motivation

Module 7 – Motivation

We’ve made it through the entire semester and now its finals week!  How do we stay motivated and focused for this last week?  In module 7, there are a few things we can do to help.  The first is an app called Noisli, which I personally tried out myself. It’s an app that creates background noise such as birds chirping, wind blowing, leaves rustling.  When surrounded by outside noises and the overwhelming stress of everything that you need to remember for finals, when you play Noisli, it is a great de-stressor!
Here is the link to download the app in slide 8 –

Another very useful tool I found in module 7 is Pocket Points.  It’s an app that you earn points for not using your phone during class lectures or while driving.  Living in a world that revolves around smart phones, it’s very easy to get distracted during class lectures.  This app will help you stay focused and reward you with points for keeping your phone in your pocket.  You can also see other classmates using the app and shows your ranking compared to them. The link in slide 13 provides the link to download this app –

I hope you have enjoyed my blog this semester and just remember my key points!  Proper “netiquette” for emails, be conscious of your social media posts, procrastination is NOT your friend, do no cram, take great notes and STAY MOTIVATED!! GOOD LUCK!!

Online Learning Strategies and Skills

Module 6 – Online Learning Strategies and Skills

Do you struggle at writing papers? Do you not even know where to start or how to even organize your thoughts? This would be me! In module 6, slide 6, there are so many helpful tools on how to properly format and organize a research paper. This video is very helpful on the “do’s” and “do not’s” in writing a paper and the differences in writing in college as opposed to high school.

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vQZrj92KI3pYOhE3FI5nQiDiNr7c6RnxVvE-i4BthXmA5EmgV3mlKmiYpH6NqqR7Br1ApVFUxrLnkr7/pub?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000&slide=id.g3cfb532c7f_0_6

Another tip in writing your paper is having credible sources that are reliable. You can put anything into Google and get a list of links that support your subject, but are they reliable sources? On slide 14, Source Credibility – Reliability, it has some basic guidelines we should follow to make sure we are obtaining information from a reputable source.

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vQZrj92KI3pYOhE3FI5nQiDiNr7c6RnxVvE-i4BthXmA5EmgV3mlKmiYpH6NqqR7Br1ApVFUxrLnkr7/pub?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000&slide=id.g3b024e9517_0_113

So just some helpful tips for students that get lost when writing papers like me, just follow the steps given in the video and make sure information we search on the web is from a .edu, .org, or .gov, etc. and properly use citations. Good luck and happy writing!

Module 5 – Online Learning and Strategy Skills

Module 5 – Online Learning and Strategy Skills

My professor is talking a mile a minute, doesn’t allow us to record the lecture and I know this information is going to be on the next exam…AHHHHH!!! I know that I should take notes to help me remember the information and keep me engaged, what do I do??!! Students are expected to take notes in lecture, but we are never shown how. This is a great video provided on slide 7 on how to become expert note takers!

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vR-CucX-jZUVsp0vhLQ0BpXulqFRh325N1XLMQrlzdbWnZvG8SZi4Sy8JKXrrtwfXD-BDUXr_l6Jkj7/pub?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000&slide=id.g3e48465cbe_0_6

This video explains different methods that can be used to effectively takes notes such as outlines, the Cornell method, mind maps or even just writing on the provided lecture slides. It covers 3 main points that we want to follow to become a better note taker, 1. Active Listening, listening for important signal words, cues or phrases. 2. Speed- using abbreviations and think about what’s important to write. 3. Structure – using a structure that organizes your information and will be easy to follow. There is also a note taking test within the video, that I took and found to be very beneficial and will be using going forward. Take it from me, a 3rd year student, effective note taking will save you time, your writing hand, and  sanity!

Module 4 – Learning and Studying Strategies

Module 4 – Effective Learning and Studying Strategies

I have 3 exams this week and I haven’t studied a thing…what do I do??? AHHHHHH!!! Are you this person? I have been, but I am here to give you some helpful tips to make your learning and studying more effective in the future.

The first step is DO NOT CRAM!! We can only remember a limited amount of information and learning information over a longer period in short bursts is more effective than pulling that “all nighter” before an exam. One of the first things I have learned in module 4 is on slide 13, just knowing the 3 steps in our memory process and how long and how much information we can retain in each.

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vToEQ056lQZucyWkZWBk4xFCkex97IhbcbWG5YsbJ46Mss5M7_WWas8Z1AaWskYt8_tJix7Zh6Jz4-C/pub?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000&slide=id.g3cfe7eebad_0_109

The second most useful thing in module 4 is the memorization tips on slide 14 in the “Read Me” link. This gave a list of guidelines to follow to make the most of our memories. Listen up, rewrite, visualize, create acronyms, map info, skim readings, teach a classmate, balance your workload, make it real and create flashcards. I already put many of these into practice by rewriting lecture slides and teaching classmates’ current topics, if you can teach it, you know it!

I have learned a lot of different study strategies and tools in this module to use in the future, online learning tools and apps such as Quizlet, but also physical things we can do to improve our brain function such as exercise and sleep! So instead of cramming and pulling an all nighter for your next exam, study in small sessions over a period of time and get a good night’s sleep before an exam!

Am I A Procrastinator?? – Module 3

Let’s face it, we all procrastinate about something in life whether its homework, laundry, or filling out that dreaded FASFA form every year!  In module 3 I have learned some important information about procrastination and how I can improve my time management.  The first thing is admitting you are in fact a procrastinator, and I am admitting that I AM ONE!!

A specific example of something from this module and what caught my interest the most was from “Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator”.  It states in the clip that we have 3 parts of procrastination, 1 – Rational Decision Maker, 2- Instant Gratification Monkey, and 3 – Panic Monster.  I give in to my Instant Gratification Monkey more times than not where I would rather do fun and easy things, instead of things I need to be doing…like HOMEWORK!  I have already put the information I have learned into practice by not giving into my gratification monkey to do something fun and easy and working on listening more to my rational decision maker before my panic monster kicks in at 11:59pm when my assignment is due.  These 3 parts of procrastination are described in full on slide 8 in module 3.  https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vRUZVXxptiijmNmsehddN36zGYtV9oSDhm91HK5ijp_QmdiXdBBfh8ZGaxz8AFg-NlYnsCim03Lsj02/pub?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000&slide=id.g3b5b2f7a21_0_60

The ideas that I would suggest from the module to help other fellow procrastinators like myself are setting up a calendar and task sheet to schedule times for tasks for better time management.  For incoming students, take my advice and study in chunks over a period instead of cramming the night before an exam and more information will be retained!  Please don’t let the Instant Gratification Monkey and Panic Monster take over!

Module 2: Communicating and Collaborating – “Netiquette”

Netiquette??

Let’s face it! We live in a generation of social media. Most of us live, breathe, eat and sleep for social media’s “likes and views”. There are some things we need to think of when we use our social media outlets, such as proper “Netiquette”. Netiquette is etiquette for social media and online communication. We always want to be conscious of what we post or say on social media to protect our digital reputation. Everything that is posted or commented on creates a digital footprint that is carried with us into our adulthood and professional careers, so be cautious of what you post and say! In this google document on slides 4 and 5 go into further detail.

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vQDfFfTekNgYcbrYPPkUhWXlokk8kZ0vBsy6JbPfO6XxCFxAsOpaGwqpZG0YCteIT0UwhNSv2eqpl0e/pub?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000&slide=id.g3b47422bc4_1_92

Most communication is now online or through email, so there are a few key rules that we need to follow, starting here in college which will carry into our professional careers. When emailing there is a few simple rules that we want to follow, make sure there is a subject line, a proper greeting, a context message, and a closing with your full name. We also want to keep in mind that emotions do not come across text, so we want to be mindful of what we are using. For example, a text in all capitol letters comes across as screaming. We also want to make sure communication is to the point, avoid abbreviations and slang. As an incoming freshman, you want to make sure you know these important rules for online communication, because you will be using these tools in the present to email professors, and in the future to your boss or employees as a CEO! The link below describes in detail the email guidelines on slides 7-11.

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vQDfFfTekNgYcbrYPPkUhWXlokk8kZ0vBsy6JbPfO6XxCFxAsOpaGwqpZG0YCteIT0UwhNSv2eqpl0e/pub?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000&slide=id.g3b47422bc4_1_205

So remember, follow these key steps and be conscious of what you write and post for the world to see, your future counts on it!
