Year in Review

This year has been an absolute blast for me. Being able to live with and become best friends with five people that I met just last year has been an incredible experience and I cannot wait for the rest of my time here to be shared with them. I have seen great changes in myself as I take on more opportunities that push me out of my comfort zone. I also hope to take on more of these opportunities through my last two years at The Ohio State University.

In high school, I was a quiet student who did not have great communication skills. I took a speech class in my final semester of senior year that I did not need to graduate but I knew that I would be able to utilize the skills learned in my future business endeavors. I definitely embarrassed myself a few times but, ever since then, I have been fascinated with improving my public speaking skills.

Coming to Ohio State, I knew that improving this set of skills would be essential for my future. One of the first organizations I joined was Scarlet and Gray Financial, where I am able to speak one-on-one with students on campus about basic personal finance. In this scenario, I am able to work on communication in a coaching setting which has built my skills in listening, building rapport, and delivering information effectively. In high school, I never could have imagined myself in this spot, but I wanted to take it one step further.

After my college tour of Ohio State in my senior year, I told myself, “This would be a really cool job.” But I had doubt in myself. I never thought that I would be able to talk to a group of people for an hour and a half while answering questions on the spot and accommodating up to twenty people at a time. Even with this, I ended up applying for the University Ambassador position because I had come to love Ohio State and I wanted to share my experiences with aspiring college students. I knew it would be tough but I also knew that it would be an involvement that I would love. I ended up getting the spot and it has been one of the most amazing, rewarding opportunities in my time here. I plan on being a University Ambassador for the next two years and I hope to leave an impact on future students every time they step onto our campus.

All of this happened because of my choice to come to Ohio State. I knew I wanted to come out of my shell and learn to communicate better with the people I met and that is exactly what Ohio State has allowed me to do. I hope to continue to grow as a person and leave an impact on the people I see every day, whether they are a student on campus or a college-bound prospective student wanting to learn more about our life as Buckeyes.

Artifacts

My artifact is the infamous Brutus Dab Hat. It represents all of the fun times I’ve had at Ohio State sports events, especially because we’ve done a lot of winning since I’ve acquired the hat. It was on my head for the B1G Championship win over Wisconsin in football, the huge upset over Michigan State in basketball (where we rushed the court after, see above), and many other awesome events.
