PSL Mentor Interview

Name: Laurencia Welch

Year: Sophomore

Major: Economics- more of a business major with a specialization in economics

Minors: French and Business Analytics

Lauren is from Beavercreek, OH, which is where I’m from. She went to Beavercreek High School and worked at Graeter’s Ice Cream with a couple of people I know from my school.

Lauren chose Ohio State because it is an in state school with a lot of academic options. Since she didn’t know what she wanted to major in when she picked her college, she chose OSU in order to explore all the options offered here and find the major that fits her interests.

PSL was not Lauren’s first choice. She originally applied to the honors college and after that, she applied to PSL Scholars because of the constantly heated political climate that we live in today. Lauren knew PSL would be a place for her to hear both sides of the issues while also strengthening her own beliefs.

Lauren’s motivation to become a mentor stemmed from the lack of mentorship during her freshman year. She knew being a mentor meant helping the underclassmen and making good connections with students who have similar interests.

As of now, Lauren is still undecided on where her career will go. She is still on a Pre-Law track but also enjoys business analytics. While the STEM field doesn’t necessarily interest her, numbers are still a big part of what she wants to do in her career and business analytics offers her that.

While in high school, Lauren was on the dance team but since coming to OSU she has not had as much time as she would like to do things like this. Taking 17 credit hours doesn’t leave a lot of time for extracurriculars. When she does have time though she likes to work out and hike.

COVID has undoubtedly impacted campus life but for me, this is the only campus life I know. For Lauren, however, she knows that this year has been a lot different than last year. She says dining options this year are not as good with Grubhub. She also says that with mostly online classes it is harder to get out of your dorm and move around and meet people.

About Me

Hello, my name is Will Moddeman. I am currently a first year undergraduate student in the John Glenn College of Public Affairs, pursuing a B.A. in Public Management, Leadership, and Policy. I am also considering a double major in Economics or Political Science with a minor in either Insurance, Judicial Politics, or Campaigns and Elections. I am also a Politics, Society, and Law Scholar within the University Honors & Scholars Center. My passion for politics drew me to this program and by surrounding myself with people who have different views I have been able to develop great communication skills.

I love getting involved and plan on becoming a University Ambassador as well as an Ambassador for the John Glenn College. I am currently working on starting a new club called Youth and Government at The Ohio State University. This club will help me develop many professional skills such as leadership, time managment, and public speaking. It will also help me grow in my understanding of the political process as well as share my political passion with others on campus.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: I can grow my cultural awareness through the wide variety of courses offered here as well as immersing myself in the issues affecting minorities across the country and across the globe. I also plan on spending a semester in Washington DC to continue my studies while also delving deeper into the problems that our policymakers are currently working on.
  • Original Inquiry: I want to get involved in political campaigns as an intern and volunteer. I would also love to participate in any political based research whether that be campaigns, elections, political geography, or many other fields.
  • Academic Enrichment: One of my academic goals for my first year is to receive a 4.0 GPA but also to deepen my knowledge in each course I take. I will continue to take rigorous courses throughout my time at Ohio State. A big goal of mine for my four years at OSU is to graduate with Latin Honors.
  • Leadership Development: I plan on starting a Youth and Government at The Ohio State University club where I will be able to develop many leadership skills while presiding over the development of that club. I also plan on getting involved with leadership opportunities in the John Glenn College of Public Affairs and within the Politics, Society, and Law Scholars program.
  • Service Engagement: Service has always been a big part of my life and I hope to continue that at OSU. I plan on beginning a service project within the Politics, Society, and Law Scholars Program that will provide much needed meals to those housed at the St. Vincent de Paul homeless shelter in downtown Columbus.
