Year in Review
[ “Year in Review” is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student. You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year. G.O.A.L.S.
Through my time here at The Ohio State University I have made many major attempts in working towards the G.O.A.L.S. By being in the Mount Leadership Society Scholars program I have been able to learn how to appreciate diversity more than I previously had. I grew up in what I thought was a very diverse city, but being in Columbus at The Ohio State University has taught me so much about cultures, ideas and people that I never knew before. I believe by surrounding myself with these experiences it has allowed me to work towards the global awareness part of G.O.A.L.S. I have worked towards the original inquiry of the G.O.A.L.S by taking part in community service events around the city of Columbus such as volunteering at the Community Kitchen. I have works towards the academic enrichment portion of G.O.A.L.S by taking courses that challenge me and push me outside of my comfort zone. I am using this time to learn more about my weaknesses and work on improving them. I am working towards the Leadership development portion of goals by not only taking courses that help me develop as a leader but by being in the Mount Leadership Society Scholars program which allows me to put the leadership skills I am learning into real life practice out in the community. This also represents how I work towards the service engagement portion of G.O.A.L.S. By being in the Mount Leadership Society Scholars program I have not only dedicated myself to 70 service hours this year with the community kitchen but I try my best to give back to help the underclassmen adjust and help them anyway I can. I try to give a helping hand to any one of my peers. I plan to work towards all these goals further by staying involved on campus and with my fellow peers. I also plan to continue challenging myself and gaining new experiences to make me a more well developed and cultured person. I believe in my time here at The Ohio State University I have really excelled in the academic enrichment and service engagement portions of G.OA.L.S because every semester I am taking classes that challenge me academically and push me to work harder. I am also using my time here to give to the community of Columbus and volunteering whenever I can.
Career

Artifacts
This is a PowerPoint I made in tenth grade about same sex marriage. For this project I had to pick a controversial topic and get non biased information about the topic. I did a survey among peers and online to get a variety of ages, locations and points of views and asked them questions about their opinions of same sex marriage. This project meant a lot to me because it allowed me to see all the different perspectives not just my own. It was extremely important to me because I believe everyone should have equality and the choice to marry whoever they love regardless of gender. I selected this artifact to include into my e-portfolio because I believe it shows who I am as a person. I am someone who believes in equality for everyone regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation religion and etc. Sexual orientation right are just one of the many things I am very passionate about. From this project I learned so much about respecting others beliefs and handling them civilly even if they do not correspond with your own. It took me by surprise how many people in my urban area are open to same same sex marriage and how many are against it because of religious reasons. This project has taught me how to approach future projects with an open mind and heart and allowed me to understand that it is okay to believe in things differently than others if you are respectful of their beliefs as well.
About Me
My name is Emma Mitchell. I am from Warren, Ohio. I am a graduate of Warren G Harding High School and a Public Affairs major at the Ohio State University specializing in non profit organizations. My career goal is to start my own nonprofit organization for urban communities like where I was raised. My aspiration in following this career path is to give back to under-served communities and make an impact on the lives of those in urban areas who might not see a better future. I believe the urban community is often overlooked and under-served because there are many negative connotations with individuals in these communities. I would like to give back to these communities and make impacts that will improve the lives of people in these areas. I believe by going into the field of public affairs I will be able to gain the tools needed to impact others and make a difference. I believe everyone should have the opportunity and support to accomplish their dreams and by attempting to work in the public sector and give back to the urban population I am helping people who may not otherwise have a chance accomplish their goals. I am aspiring to help people reach their goals and see the many opportunities there are in life. I am a Kinisthetic learner and can be introverted. I am very kind and warm hearted and dependable.
