Whether we like it or not, doing research and composing research papers is a huge component within college. Even if you are a business major or chemical engineer, you will be required to take an English course that will have you complete a research paper. You may even have to do some research on a topic in your economic class for studying purposes! The one thing about searching the web is that all the information provided is not credible. I would like to give you some tips on how to conduct proper research, which will hopefully allow the students reading this to fear the idea of research a little bit less!
For starters, when searching for academic articles, use Google Scholar! I know Google search is my favorite tool, but it can be a little hard to find credible academic information under this basic search engine which is why Google Scholar was invented. Google Scholar makes it easier to access peer reviewed articles, academic text, and other extremely credible work for academic purposes. In the event that you do use Google search, try to use the advanced search option to place limits on the search in order to narrow it to more specific results. Also play close attention to the url link because it can be used to identify if a cite is credible more easier. For example, if the url says “blog” in it… you probably should avoid it. But, if the url says “article”, then it might be something worth looking into!
Lastly, don’t forget to utilize your university’s library resources! If your school is anything like mine (Yay Ohio State), our library has a lot of access to online databases to search for academic works. Ask your professors what they use for their research! They will most definitely point you in the right direction! Good luck!
