Homework 12: The Secret of Drawing-Episode 3 Reflection
I really enjoyed this episode. Cynthia Pell was really intriguing to me especially because she was mentally ill, and her drawings were so raw. They captured the essence of her life and really allowed what was in her mind to flow out onto the paper. I think that some of the people that suffer from mental illness are some of the best artists because they do what they want to do and how they want to do it and it really shows what they are feeling and thinking and allows us outsiders a glimpse into their minds.Michael Landy stuck out to me because of his view on weeds and the reasons for drawing them, he mentioned how he views them as optimistic. I admired this view because most of the time people are spending money and time in their lawn trying to get rid of the weeds because they hate them and want them gone. He mentioned how he tried to plant them in a pot and nurture them and they died but when the seeds blew and grew on their own in a crack the weeds blossomed and thrived without nurturing care. I think he admired the weeds and related himself to a weed in a sense. I liked listening to Sara Simblet because she really encourages her students to approach drawing in a way that is natural to each individual, sometimes in art classes I feel that this concept is forgotten and the instructions are more focused on meeting certain criteria or an idealistic view of what something is supposed to look like. She mentions how she helps with the technicalities but the artwork itself is credited to the artist and they are to draw they way they view the world.
