The MIRACL Study: Maternal Immune Responsiveness as Clinical Target for Preterm Birth Prevention

Preterm birth is a complication of pregnancy that can negatively affect the health of the baby. Immune cells of the mother are thought to play a role in determining birth timing, though little is known about differences in immune cells that promote a timely versus early birth. This study will test new methods of identifying women at risk for preterm birth and predicting response to preventive interventions. We will also examine if and how maternal factors affect immune cells of the mother and baby and determine whether this is important to birth outcomes and outcomes for the baby.

Will participation affect my care?

No. This is an observational study, meaning that researchers will not ask you to receive any treatments or interventions. Prenatal and labor and delivery care will remain under a regular healthcare provider.

What does the study involve?

Participants will complete two study visits during pregnancy (~45 minutes to 1 hour each). At each, you will be asked to answer questions about yourself, your health, health behaviors, pregnancies, stress, and mood. Your temperature will be measured. We will also collect about 1 ½ tablespoons of blood. When the baby is born, it is common for hospitals to collect a cord blood sample. Our team will pick up any leftover samples. We will request medical records to learn about the pregnancy, birth, and baby.

Is there any compensation?

Yes. Participants receive $40 at each pregnancy study visit (up to a total of $80).

You may be eligible if you:

Are less than 21 weeks pregnant with one baby; have had or will have a dating ultrasound.
