(04/2021) Welcome Erica Howard to the MINDSET Lab!!
We are excited to announce the addition of Erica to the MINDSET Lab. She will also be starting the PhD program for clinical psychology in Fall 2021!! Erica graduated from Fordham University in 2017 with a B.S. in Neuroscience. She then worked with neurodegenerative disease patients at the University of Pennsylvania before joining the MINDSET lab in 2021. She is pursuing a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Neuropsychology. Her research interests include brain injury and its interaction with other biopsychological risk factors for neurodegeneration. For fun, Erica enjoys traveling, auto racing, and hanging out with family and friends.
(04/2021) Welcome Savana Jurgens to the MINDSET Lab!!
We are excited to announce the addition of Savana to the MINDSET Lab. She will be starting the PhD program for clinical psychology in Fall 2021!! Savana graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. in Psychology and Biology in 2020. Before joining the MINDSET Lab, she worked as a research assistant on a study examining the long-term effects of stress and TBI in veterans at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. Her research interests include neural and genetic correlates of symptom outcomes in TBI and stress-related disorders. Outside of the lab she enjoys hiking, music, travel and the occasional reality TV binge.
(04/2021) Both Jena and Kate Successfully Defend their Master’s!!
Both Jena and Kate successfully defended their Master’s theses this month!! They both worked incredibly hard on their projects and we are so proud!!
Nimanthi, an undergraduate researcher at the MINDSET Lab, has just been awarded a fellowship from the Second-Year Transformational Experience Program (STEP). Students who complete this program are eligible for funding in multiple areas, including research. Nimanthi plans to use this funding to work on her undergraduate thesis at the MINDSET Lab over this summer. Way to go Nimanthi!!
(04/2021) Erin is Awarded the Billingslea Research Award!
Erin received this award due to her scholastic achievements and her research goals. This award is only given to juniors and seniors who stand out academically and have research that can be applied to clinical issues. This is a great achievement for Erin and we are so proud of her! We are happy to see her hard work be awarded!
(03/2021) Jena Gets an Honorable Mention for Her NSF Graduate Fellowship Grant!
Jena submitted an NSF Grant and received an honorable mention! This is an incredibly competitive grant and we are proud of the hard work that Jena put into this grant. Way to go Jena!
(03/2021) Erin is Awarded URAP Funding!
Erin Gilliland, an undergraduate researcher for the MINDSET Lab, was awarded funding from the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program! She will be using the funding to perform research at the MINDSET Lab over the summer. Way to go Erin!
(03/19/2021) Dr. Hayes Presents at the 2021 TBI Summit!
Dr. Hayes is talking about the complexities that arise for an individual with TBI during treatment if they have an additional mood or psychological disorder. The entire summit is March 18th and 19th. Dr. Hayes is presenting “Lessons from Veterans’ Care” tonight at 6:30 pm. This is an educational workshop from OSU’s Chronic Brain Injury program. The presentation is aimed towards survivors of brain injury and their families or care takers, but all are welcome! Jena Moody is presenting her poster “Body mass index and genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease predict conversion to Alzheimer’s disease.” Jena has worked very hard on this project and we are so happy her hard work and project are on display. As we start to welcome new undergraduate students, we would also like to wish farewell to one of our undergraduate students Gioia. Gioia has been with the lab for two years and has done amazing work for the MINDSET Lab. She will be missed, but we know Gioia will do great things in her future career. Graduate student Sarah Prieto has received a Career Development Grant! This grant is provided to assist graduate students in preparing for placement in their specific field. Sarah is planning to use this grant to allow her to present at a conference. It is important to note that this grant is awarded to individuals that show strong connections between their professional goals and their career development plans. The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease has published the article titled, “Genetic risk for Alzheimer’s Disease moderates the association between medial temporal lobe volume and episodic memory performance among older adults,” which was written and worked on by members of The MINDSET Lab! This program brought high school students together with distinguished OSU professors to engage in dynamic lectures and digitally interactive learning spaces. Dr. Hayes recently wrote a piece for WalletHub.com discussing her top tips on how to fight stress without having to spend money. This article highlights the most and least stressed states in the country and provides helpful information on stress. Dr. Hayes gives a handful of very helpful tips on how you can reduce the stress in your life by making time for activities to combat stress. (01/2020) The MINDSET Lab Has a New Lab Space!!!
The MINDSET Lab has a newly renovated lab space on the 2nd floor of the Psychology Building! Complete with a custom sign of our lab logo, OSU colors, and plenty of space to work, we are so excited to utilize this space. We are very excited to work in this new space, and are already making it feel like home with the addition of cupcakes and other goodies every few days. We can’t wait to see what happens in this new space!

(11/13/2019) Dr. Hayes is Presenting at the International Society for Traumatic Stress 35th Annual Meeting in November!
Dr. Hayes will be giving a presentation at the International Society for Traumatic Stress 35th Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday, November 13th. The meeting this year will focus on “Trauma, Recovery, and Resilience: Charting a Course Forward” and will feature a multitude of scholarly presentations on this theme. Her talk will focus on the neurobiology of PTSD where she will be discussing the growing importance of neuroimaging, hormones, and genetics on research involving PTSD.
(10/24/2019) Sarah and Jess (B-BAL) submit an NSF Grad Proposal!
Congratulations to Sarah and Jess (B-BAL) for submitting an NSF Graduate research proposal! We are so proud of these two for challenging themselves and for all of the hard work they have done with these projects. We celebrated their accomplishment with good music and even better donuts- Duck Donuts! We are very proud of these two for taking a big step and putting themselves out there. Now we await the results!
(07/25/2019) Gioia Presents at the 2019 Consortium Research Symposium!
Gioia attended the 2019 Consortium Research Symposium to present her research on sleep, stress, and the precuneus. This event was put together by the Graduate School at OSU, and she was invited to present her research through her summer fellowship provided by the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program. She had the opportunity to share her research with a wide range of individuals from many different departments, colleges, and even universities.

(03/2019) Gioia is awarded the URAP Fellowship!
Gioia has been awarded the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program fellowship, which will fund her summer project on resilience factors and TBI with an award of $4,000! She will present her project at a conference during the school year.
