Tradition
No body else in my family has been to Ohio State so all the new traditions were so new and special to me. I learned Carmen fairly fast and it was so special to see Script Ohio happen so close to me. I love the community of OSU and it has welcomed me with open arms. Seeing the traditions during the major functions during welcome week and throughout my first year here has introduced me to a whole new proud community of people. I can truly say I am proud to be a Buckeye!
R-Lead and OWL
When I first came to OSU, I was here about 2 weeks early. I was here for a program called R-Lead where people were placed into small groups and taken around the campus before the masses got here. I met my first friends in this program and I learned so much about myself. It was a great introduction to such a large school because I was able to see familiar faces everywhere I went. We did many leadership activities and got talks on diversity and inclusion. Overall, it was a great program and I would recommend it to incoming freshmen who want to meet people right away! OWL was right after and in this program we moved in the rest of the student population into their dorms. With OWL we got to go to the food and ate a lot of free food!
2018-2019 G.O.A.L.S.
Global Awareness:
At some point at my time at Ohio State I want to study abroad. I am interested in traveling somewhere in Europe such as Greece, Spain, or Italy. I also want to travel somewhere on a service trip, such as a Buck-I-Serv trip. I want to go to somewhere like Ghana or Costa Rica and work with people in another country or somewhere around the US. Through Health Science Scholars, we are given many opportunities that introduce us to the diversity in the US and in the world such as the DICE certificate program.
Original Inquiry:
Over the course of the freshman year, I have learned about the research process in the chemistry 1210 course and experienced this during the lab portion of the class. In this course we conduct an experiment and then write a lab report on the experiment. In my english 1110.01 class, I researched gender roles in the US and how those roles affect people. I wrote an extensive paper on this topic throughout the course of the class as well. My goal is to get experience in a professional lab next year.
Academic Enrichment:
In the beginning of the year I chose to study the ‘health sciences’ major. Recently I have decided to switch into the ‘human development and family sciences’ major. My eventual goal is being an occupational therapist and I found another major I will enjoy more to help me get to that goal. My intended minor is disability studies, as that topic is one that is close to my heart. I should still graduate on time even though I switched my major but I am looking forward to a new start with HDFS and the college of education and human ecology.
Leadership Development:
Throughout this year I have been mainly involved with Health Science Scholars through going to the large events and group activities. I am currently in Autism Speaks club as well as a newer club called Buckeyes Give a Break. Both clubs work with children who have disabilities which connects to my minor. I also did CHAARG this year which is a workout group for girls. Next year I want to become more involved in the organizations I am involved in and work toward my goals in one day becoming a leader in them.
Service Engagement:
This year in service I have been involved a lot with my scholars community, as we have been to a place called Heinzerling Community and volunteered there multiple times. I have volunteered at schools with Autism Speaks as well as assist families with Buckeyes Give a Break. My goal next semester is to be volunteering at the Wexner Center and shadowing/volunteering with occupational therapists around Columbus. I am also going to be involved with College Mentors for Kids this upcoming semester!
Freshman Year of College: A Review
This past year, my freshman year, I have grown so much academically and personally. I have learned more about what I want to do with my life and how I will come back into my second year of college stronger than before! So many exciting and wonderful things have happened this year.
- I changed my major! I never thought I would end up changing my major but I did! Life really does surprise you and it has helped me to learn to be more flexible. My longterm goal remains the same (occupational therapy) but I switched my major from ‘health sciences’ to ‘human development and family science’ (or HDFS). I am very happy that I have switched my major and I think it will be more beneficial in the long run.
- I have learned about mindfulness! This is now something that I am so proud to be been taught and I try to incorporate it into my life. I learned about it in a half semester course and I think it ultimately changed my life. I feel so much more at peace with myself. I am not perfect at it because it is a work in progress but ultimately so worth it! Through this I have tried meditation and yoga and both are defiantly worth a try! Here is a link on mindfulness if you want to learn more: https://www.mindful.org/what-is-mindfulness/
- I have also learned to ask for help more. My second semester I started going to Wellness Coaching once every other week. I can ultimately say that talking about my feelings and getting my stressful emotions off my chest has helped more than anything. My coach was such an amazing person (shoutout Tommy!) and he talked me through my stressful emotions. One thing that was super helpful was the gratitude journal I was given. Every other day I write 3 things I am thankful for and this has helped me to stop and count my blessings. Another thing I tried was Academic Coaching in the Younkin Success Center. I went to learn more studying strategies to help me score higher on my tests and through this my test anxiety has decreased and I feel more confident in my ability to test.
- Get Involved! I am currently in Buckeyes Give a Break and involved in my Health Science Scholars community. I have done service with all three and met some great people. I am looking forward to getting more involved this upcoming year because I know what I can handle now! I cannot wait for more opportunities to grow and learn through the clubs and organizations here at OSU.
