Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. About Me

Hi my name is Katie Milone and I am from Hebron, a small town in Connecticut. I am majoring in Biology with a pre-med track. Although I am focused on a career in medicine, I am also very interested in history and art. After my four years of undergraduate I am hoping to go to Physician’s Assistant school and pursue a career as a PA.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Global Awareness

Cultivating an appreciation and understanding of diversity not only with regards to individuals, but in cultures and religions, is an extremely important part of maturing into well-educated adults. In order to achieve this, I applied to and was accepted into an honors class for the AU19 semester that focuses on the history and culture of Britain. This class allows me to travel abroad to London for 10 days over winter break with my peers and explore the things we were taught in the classroom. This opportunity is offered only for first year Honors and Scholars students, which helps new students meet and foster relationships with peers that are in similar programs as them.

Original Inquiry

Honors students are expected to delve into subjects that are of interest to them and further their knowledge outside of the classroom in unique and original ways. This can be as simple as doing research in a science lab, or becoming a published author. Due to my Biology major, I plan on fulfilling this requirement through undergraduate research. Not only is research going to be sought for when I am applying to graduate school to become a Physician’s Assistant, but it is also something I am genuinely interested in exploring. I feel as though undergraduate research will help me determine if research is a path I can see myself following for a career. I think it is also extremely rewarding to collect data that could be useful in accomplishing a task.

Academic Enrichment

Once again, honors students are expected to enrich their academic experience in college by pursuing a rigorous and well-rounded curriculum. The world is becoming more competitive every year and it is crucial that students develop into multi-faceted individuals before they are released into the real world to fend for themselves. As a Biology major with aspirations of Physician’s Assistant graduate school, it is extremely important that I not only take a rigorous schedule with many different dimensions to it, but that I also excel in these courses. I am considering minoring in something such as a language to enhance my knowledge and make myself stand out. I feel as though knowing more than one language in valuable to the healthcare system, especially considering how prevalent languages such as Spanish are in the United States.

Leadership Development

Currently I am involved in a club called Buckeye Blackout, which promotes sustainability on campus through live music shows. The club is relatively small but all of the members are very passionate about sustainability, music or both. I am hoping to move up through the ranks into a leadership position next year or the year after to build my resume and to be in a position to make more decisions for the club. In addition, I would like to get hired for a job, preferably relating to the medical field in some way, that would add some more leadership experience.

Service Engagement

Service is something I am rather passionate about and in my opinion, is something that everyone should do. I have volunteered at multiple institutions related to the medical field, including a physcial therapy center and a hospital. I have been volunteering at these places locally since I was 15 years old. I would really enjoy continuing this volunteering so affirm that I want to go into the medical field for my career. In addition, I plan on joining the MedLife club next year, as this organization has many service opportunities. I have also desired to go to a third world country and offer medical services to the citizens there. MedLife has 1 or 2 trips per year that do this kind of service work, which is something I definitely plan on taking part in before I graduate.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen.
