Media Marketing and Communication Scholars Work

This page contains graphics works that were created as a graphic designer for the Media Marketing and Communication Scholars Program at The Ohio State University. From the years of 2018-2022.

Freshman Leadership Officer Logo

This logo was created for the Freshman Leadership Officers and a second version was created for the Sophomore Leadership Officers. The goal was the emulate the Media Marketing and Communication (MMC) logo by using the same order of colors and pixelating the final letter. The pixelation was the hardest part because it was my first time doing it, but it quickly became a signature skill of mine. This design was turned used for stickers, buttons and t-shirts.

Digital Sandbox Instructor Logo

The Digital Sandbox Instructor logo was created to revamp the old one so that it also better emulated MMC logo. I did not want to repeat the FLO/SLO logo so I opted to change where the colors were located in the logo by adding the brackets. The digital sandbox is its own entity with its own logo so I chose to take the font from that logo and use the brackets to separate the instructor from the digital sandbox but also show that it was a part of it. This design was used for stickers and buttons.

Digital Labs Logo

My supervisor wanted to create a logo for the office that I work in, which he entitled the digital lab. He wanted to include a beaker that had a pixelated look to it which is a signature part of the Media Marketing and Communication (MMC) Scholars logo. I have worked a great deal with pixelated images in my FLO and DSI projects so I wanted to included the pixelation in the letters. I continued with the colors in the mmc logo and made it look like the pixelated liquid was pouring onto the lab and beginning to cover the letters. The most difficult part was making the contents of the beaker appear but liquid and pixelated. after a few iterations my supervisor and I found that only making one color on the top pixelated translated better than all of the colors being pixelated.

MMC Connect Challenge

The MMC connect challenge is for members of the program and is meant to inspire them to get involved with volunteer work, campus and Columbus. There were many iterations (as seen on the left) before getting to the final (the middle) The first part of this was knowing that it would be split into three pieces that would be awarded to the students as they completed each. While the designs on the left fulfilled this, my supervisor wanted something that connected more the MMC, so I chose to utilize a previously designed character, the outlet strip that is used for MMC Connect and create a power strip. The challenge is meant to be done in groups so we chose to have four people on the outlet strip and have them spell out OHIO with their arms. From there it was a matter of adding other deals to the power strip like the on/off button and the cord. The final part of this was the creation of a character that could be animated in videos, with inspiration from the video game Chibi-Robo myself and another member of the graphics team worked together to create the outlet man on the right. This design was used by our video team to create animations to use in promotional videos.

Project Group Schedules

MMC offers project groups each semester taught by either staff members or participants in the program. Each semester several iterations of the flyer have to be created. When I was first hired to work in the Digital Lab the process for creating these flyers was very long and complicated involving moving back and forth between Indesign, Illustrator and Acrobat. This past year as supervisor I sampled everything to be in Illustrator by creating a template for the schedule spacing. Each semester a new background design is created as well focused on fall imagery and winter imagery for the corresponding semester.

MMClic App Background

This background was one of the first projects I worked on my freshman year. I used blurs to create highlights and shadows on the curtains and clipping masks to create the spotlight on the board. While the app never came to fruition, creating this background was one of the most fulfilling moments I’ve had while working as it was my first serious project.
