Welcome to my Honors & Scholars e-Portfolio

Welcome to my E-Portfolio! My name is Gabriella Miller. I am a freshman at The Ohio State University. My portfolio describes my values, goals, experience, and an overall insight into my college experience. I am in the Biological Sciences Scholars Program, and my G.O.A.L.S. can be found within my page. I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge throughout this first year of college.

Year in Review

My first semester at Ohio State has been amazing. There, of course, has been ups and downs, but I could not imagine attending another university. I have met so many amazing people, and now, I have new best friends to go through college with and maybe even medical school. Courses I took are general chemistry, Spanish two, and a couple other smaller classes this semester. Chemistry has been really hard, but I am doing pretty good. Spanish is my favorite class right now, and I am doing great in it. I have been thinking about maybe minoring in Spanish. I am looking forward to a fresh start next semester.

G.O.A.L.S.

I am making G.O.A.L.S. a priority as a biological sciences scholars student because a well-rounded student would embody each aspect of this acronym. G.O.A.L.S. stands for global awareness, original inquiry, academic enrichment, leadership development, and service. I am looking forward to studying abroad in a Spanish speaking country. This trip will attribute to the Global Awareness aspect, exposing me to diversity. I have begun the process to become involved in research with the university. I will be able to work on my original inquiry while acquiring necessary career related skills. I have been developing my academic enrichment by making connections with my professors and meeting with different outlets, such as my academic advisor and a career counselor. Through the premed club, I am pursuing developing my leadership skills. I want to eventually become club president and help others gain exposure to what to expect in the higher years of undergraduate prior to medical school. I am highly committed to service because it is a large part of my personal passions. I love helping others and volunteering my time to those that need assistance.

Career

While I will be continually bettering my skills at Ohio State to prepare me for medical school and my career, I currently have no valuable experience. I will be working in a lab with performing research as well as volunteering at a hospital. When I volunteer at a hospital, I will obtain skills that are crucial for my future.

Artifacts

I have two professional goals that are extremely important to me: become a doctor and be fluent in Spanish. My desire to accomplish these two goals began in early high school. Every choice I made was in preparation for going to college and being one step closer to my goals. I took the most rigorous courses throughout high school as well as college classes. I started obtaining college credit to use towards my undergraduate degree. I had four years of Spanish in high school to start the path to becoming bilingual. Currently, I am on the premed track and taking Spanish. I may possibly minor in Spanish to further my knowledge on not only the language itself but also the culture. I think being a bilingual doctor would be a highly rewarding job and lifestyle. I am passionate about helping others. Although I am undecided on the type of doctor that I want to be, but I would love to specialize and own my own practice. Pictured below is after my high school graduation which was the first step towards my life long goals.

I am a member of the Chemistry and Biochemistry club on campus. I was able to make connections during one of the first weeks of the semester with advisors in these majors as well as with other students similar to me. We all enjoyed ice cream together while talking about our goals and expectations for freshman year. After attending this event, I feel I truly belonged in this community at Ohio State. Pictured below is two of my biochemistry friends and me enjoying ice cream together at the event.

About Me

Hi, my name is Gabriella Miller. I am from Niles, Ohio which is about three hours northeast of Columbus. I graduated from Niles McKinley High School in May 2018. In high school I immersed myself into countless volunteer hours, clubs, and a few sports. I love to be able to impact someone’s life and make a difference, and I was able to do this through volunteering. I am a board member for the non-profit (501c-3) organization Courtney’s Coats for Kids. This organization is in memory of my sister, Courtney Miller. She attended OSU from 2009-2013; a few months before her graduation she was killed in a car accident. Courtney’s Coats for Kids provides new coats, hats, and gloves to underprivileged children in Niles. I love being able to give back to the community while honoring my sister.

I am a biochemistry major in the class of 2022 at The Ohio State University, and I am in the biological sciences scholars program. I have chosen biochemistry my major because I believe it will adequately prepare me for my future, and I love science. I am in the biochemistry and chemistry club as well as the Premed Club. I chose these clubs because as a premed student, each of these will help with my career goals and my major. Eventually, I would like to be an officer for the Premed Club, so I hold a position similar to my own in Courtney’s Coats for Kids. Throughout this time I want to volunteer as much as possible and study abroad. I would love to study abroad to Spanish speaking countries. After I receive complete my time as an undergraduate, I will attend medical school. I am currently undecided on a specific profession, but I am certain I want to be a part of the medical field. I am very passionate about learning, and I am so excited to pursue the biochemistry major. While I know this will not be an easy journey, all of the hard work will certainly payoff. A goal I have set for myself is to become fluent in Spanish because I am passionate about it, and I will be able to help more people as a bilingual doctor. I cannot wait to become a doctor!
