Year in Review
[ “Year in Review” is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student. You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year. Global Awareness
I believe that global awareness is being not only aware of the problems in your community but also the problems that people of all different cultures and backgrounds are facing worldwide. Being globally aware is a continual process of seeking to know the problems that people all over the world are facing.
I feel that global awareness is very important if social change is going to occur. I try to stay globally engaged by seeking out the problems in various communities. In the past few months, I have done things like visit the multicultural center to learn about various backgrounds, cultures, and identities. This taught me that being culturally aware is very important to create appropriate change. I also attended a seminar that discussed food insecurity on college campuses. Through attending things like these, I have become more aware of problems in my community and communities all over the world. I truly believe that the first step to change is becoming aware of issues. I plan to continue to be globally aware and to use what I have learned to create small change where I can.
Career
[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career. Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. ACES Film Project
As I entered The Ohio State University, I chose to be a part of the Advocates for Communities and Education program. In this class I was placed in a group and asked to choose a film that demonstrated the four pillars of our program and present it to the class. The film that my group chose was called “Living on One Dollar”. This documentary showed four men that traveled to a rural town in Guatemala called Peña Blanca. While there, they tried to simulate the poverty the people of the community were facing by living on one dollar a day. The four men showed the hardships that people in severe poverty face and brought awareness to the Peña Blanca community through their film.
From this film project, I saw the problems that many people in the world must face when they live well below the poverty line. This project showed just one problem facing the world in one area. I feel that it is important to continually learn and investigate problems facing the world if I am going to create change.
About Me
My name is Kayla Miller I am a member of the Advocates for Communities and Education scholars program at The Ohio State University. In the future I hope to work in a hospital laboratory setting and participate in medical research.
When entering Ohio State I decided to be apart of the ACES scholars program because of my passion and background in community service. I have participated in service in my community for several years and wanted to continue to serve during my time at Ohio State.
My interest and passion for science has lead me to my career choice. My hope to change others lives for the better has lead me to the health care field. I have found myself to be a more “behind the scenes worker” so laboratory work seemed like the perfect fit. I hope that my work in the lab can help make advancements to better the lives of individuals. I feel that I am a hard, focused, and determined worker. I think these qualities along with my continued curiosity for science will help me further advance in my career path.
