Concept Mapping

After creating my concept map, I saw the majority of the map interconnects with each category. At some point in my concept map, the design category interconnects with transportation and the environment. Every point has an outcome that can either be positive or negative. For instance, an appealing city would increase traffic congestion which would increase pollution. Citizens could possibly get sick and die from the high concentration of pollution in the air and land. Due to the high number of sick citizens and deaths, there may be a high demand for doctors or cemeteries. Cemeteries can be seen as an unappealing feature and could decrease the appealing nature of the city. An unappealing city will not bring in tourism and will feature unhappy citizens. On the other hand, a city with proper outside road connections can increase tourism and imports/exports. Tourism and the trading of goods will bring in more money for any city. The money used from trading goods and services can be used to update different parts of the city that is no longer working for its citizens. This will promote resident happiness and hopefully bring in more tourism. With all of that being said, every city needs to make sure that there is proper road connections, layouts, and room for growth.

I think Cities: Skylines effectively captures the interactions of the different categories mentioned above. In the case, of pollution, the game will show you where different parts of the city have been polluted and how badly. This allows gamers to separate their citizens from the industrial buildings that produce the most pollution. From what I have seen the game does not tell you what citizens are getting sick from and dying. Instead, the game will inform you how many citizens have died. Cities: Skylines will also show you how bad traffic is and will allow you to toggle between traffic lights or stop signs. Cities: Skylines will also show you the percentage of tourists that come into your city. Resident happiness informs players on what areas of life need to be improved upon. Players can also see the number of imports and exports that are traveling into their city. I think the game does a good job linking different parts of the game to simulate real life, but there are also elements of the game that are fictional.
