Artifact February 2017

This year I went to Philadelphia for the Society of Women Engineers national conference. This is the largest women’s conference for STEM related fields and brings collegiate and professionals around the country together. They have workshops, service learning for elementary students, a career fair, and so much more, I was able to learn so much from my first one alone.

Twenty engineering students from the Ohio State chapter were able to be flown out for this long weekend conference. This was a great bonding experience for the students and also networking for all the people that came from Ohio State.

I was able to go to a bunch of seminars during the trip. This is one of the best parts of the trip. Because professionals were presenting, they were able to teach me so much for my future. I also went to the career fair where I was able to get two internship offers. I was also able to listen to very moving keynote speakers.

For my first conference of its type, I was able to learn so much. I am so lucky to be apart of an organization that allows me to go to these events for free and gain valuable knowledge.

Marine Tours in Isla Mar

Studying abroad was a uniquely great experience. I never imagined that going to a country like Mexico which is so close and relatively well known would be so different. I definitely went through culture shock for a quick while then but it was so cool regardless. My host mother was so helpful with indirectly teaching me about the place and language.

We went to a school, Universidad de Meridad, which was much smaller than Ohio State but just as nice. We got to meet students and somewhat assimilate  within the community. On the weekends, we would take trips not too far away to big cities nearby. We went to places like Playa del Mar, Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Campeche, and many more. We would eat fantastic food, look at popular sites and learn about this play we thought we knew so much about. We also went to a ton of historic sites which were older than anything I had seen before! Most were Mayan ruins and Mexican Revolutionary sites.

The friendships I made on this trip will last a lifetime and I am just so lucky I got to experience something so life changing.

Year in Review

Sophomore Year in Review

This past summer I studied abroad in Mexico with the Scholars program. We studied in Merida where we stayed with a host family. We went around the Yucatan Peninsula exploring the culture, Mayan ruins, and famous cities. It was definitely one of the coolest and most rewarding experiences of college career thus far. I also additionally worked at a pool as a Diver Coach and Water Safety Instructor and went abroad again to Bora-Bora and Tahiti.

This fall I moved into Mack Hall, an old but charming dorm. I worked on making all the requirements for my major as well as figure out what I want for a minor. I focused on the Engineers without Borders program we picked up in the Njau, the Gambia and worked on paperwork and our trip over winter break.

Over the winter break, I applied to be a first year engineering teaching assistant and was able to get the position. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my school career thus far. This semester I also took my final classes to get into my major and picked up my first class for a globalization minor. I got elected to be the marketing chair for Engineers without Borders. I also joined a social sorority on campus and became very involved with that. Lastly, I finally finished my work with Scholars to finally get my designation.

About Me

“What are you?” A common phrase among my daily conversation, especially when I meet new people. Out of context it probably seems like the most absurd question to ask someone but I have to say if I met myself that I, too, would probably ponder the same. I’ve never previously viewed myself as a diverse person, maybe diverse in my physical appearance, but not enough when it came to my culture or personality. Moving to Ohio, I have only realize how lucky I am with the diversity I possess. I’m lucky to grow up in a multicultural home where I would practice Irish and Chinese traditions in harmony. I have learned Irish lullabies but also how to make a paper crane in under two minutes. But what I am even more grateful for is the diversity of experiences I have had and the diversity of the people who have shaped me. I have found an unwonted home with empanadas, Spanish music, and especially bachata, a Dominican dance style. I’ve grown up knowing more slang words in Spanish than I do in English and have been to more quinceaneras than I have weddings. I have matured in so many unusual ways because of the fortune I had to meet so many diverse people, experience so many unique traditions, and the concession I have given to diversity.

This diversity of culture that I only have a recent appreciation for has driven be to more open to the range of experiences I have taken at Ohio State. With endless opportunities to explore, I try to not restrict myself into one pathway that most of the students in my major take. Currently I am on the Mechanical Engineering track, which can sometimes be very overwhelming and results in many of its students only focusing on a high GPA rather than utilizing all the experiences that a large campus has to offer. So I’ve tried to make my time here as diverse as possible by getting a minor, becoming an International Affairs Scholar, taking classes even if they are not within my requirements, and participating in many extracurricular activities such as Habitat for Humanity, Greek Life, Engineers without Borders, and assistant teaching in the College of Engineering. I am so lucky to be a part of a place where I am not restricted in what I do because of a lack of resources because there is almost everything available at my fingertips.

One place I haven’t been able to explore as much as I would like to yet at Ohio State is my artistic endeavors. In high school, honors students actually had no art requirement. I do have to take one art class for my major but unfortunately I have already completed it through AP Art. Additionally because of my heavy course load, it can be very difficult to fit art classes. I have been continually searching of ways to still express my creatively such as entering the EED Creative Arts and Writing Competition last year but I really want something more. Art has always been a great way for me to release stress and also work different parts of my brain and hand-eye focus that I don’t usually use in class and I have missed it far too much.

So this fall, I created my own company, Game Day Way. This started simply from me making fun costume-like shirts for football games but progressed to me crafting all of my friends’ outfits as well. I started these projects because I loved to make them, found it to be a good de-stressor, and also felt like it was something I was talented at. Eventually, I invested in a solid amount of materials put up some of my clothes online and for a small company, it went pretty well.

All in all, I feel very confident in the work I have done so far, in and out of the classroom. I look forward to my future at Ohio State and to what I will accomplish beyond it.

Year in Review

Freshman Year in Review

I am so happy with this whole year. I have met so many great people and made so many memories I am so lucky to have spent my freshman year here at this amazing school. So many things have changed and I feel that I have grown a lot as a person.

Last semester I took 17 credit hours as an Engineering Undeclared student. But my favorite class was my one credit hour IA seminar-not a joke haha. But really it was a nice break from all my highly intense engineering classes and brought a lot of new ideas to me. I also joined many clubs and went to tons of football games. I liked the warm weather but got scared as it started to get cold. I went home for thanksgiving instead of going to Michigan.

Over winter break I went on a service trip to Florida!

In the spring, I became an officer for two clubs for next year: Engineers without Borders and Society of Women Engineers. I had lots of friends visit and stayed inside a lot because it was so cold! I definitely wished it had snowed though. I took a lot of difficult classes this semester. I also went to Los Angeles for Spring Break! My favorite class is my Spanish class but I really enjoy Calc 2 as well. I went on a trip to Indiana for a Concrete Canoe Competition and also for Engineers without Borders to Hocking Hills. It was a really good semester and I am excited to finish it.

ASCE Concrete Canoe Crew 2016 at the OVSC 2016

This year I took a leap of faith and joined something I knew nothing about. For the longest time I couldn’t fathom how a concrete canoe could float and have people in it. Or even just float. But with the lovely work of engineering and my awesome captains, the concrete canoe team came out with an awesome canoe.

We went to Laurenceburg, Indiana which is a small town right outside of Cincinnati. Cincinnati State hosted the competition and we competed in the Hidden Valley Lake nearby. There were 10 other teams in the competition and we were against some skills with much better skill bases, funding, and overall idea of how to complete this task in general. One school even uses this project as their capstone.

The group ended up finishing in 4th overall which was actually pretty cool having a lot of new members. But there is definitely a lot to learn from what happened this year. Also of course, I was happy to meet many students but especially a lot of engineering majors who were older and I can now ask for help. I am excited to get to know all of them a lot better but maybe not understand their senior year struggles.

Buckeyethon, Approximately 11 hours into the event and we still have smiles

Between last semester and this semester I have been participating with a philanthropy group on campus, Buckeyethon. Buckeyethon is the largest student run philanthropy organization on campus and it completes amazing work. The club’s ultimate goal is to end childhood cancer and raises money for children at Nationwide’s children’s hospital in Columbus. They host multiple events each year including a Dance Marathon in February for 24 hours. (Buckeyethon at The Ohio State University https://buckeyethon.osu.edu/)

Overall, I raised almost $500 myself for this cause. I reached out for money from relatives and family friends which was actually more rewarding than I thought. I really enjoyed talking to everyone who would reach out to me to ask questions and so many people were willing to donate to a great cause. I was apart of the SWiEsters group which was a group of SWE and WiE members, both engineering women organizations.

All in all, the Buckeyethon might have been the most tiring thing I have done in my life. But there were plenty of activities to complete and I was really happy to do them. I was also really happy knowing that all the bruises and blisters from that day were going to a great cause. I also learned a lot about the kids, made some good friends, and learned how to square dance! I can’t wait to do it next year.

Habitat for Humanity trip to New Smyrna, Florida

This year I joined a service club called Habitat for Humanity. You may be familiar with this organization but I can clarify what it is about. This is a program that is dedicated to making affordable housing for those who need it. The organization provides all materials, building partners and funding through donation and volunteers. The people who receive the house also put in work into the house and some money and are able to get a home ready for them in just a few months.

This club works on many houses around the Columbus area but the one I worked on was in Florida. We stayed in a group of about 12 people in one house and for one week went to different places to help the local Habitat for Humanity group.

I met some amazing people and not just students in the club. The people who take the time out of their day to spend it with Habitat for Humanity are some great people. I was lucky to have such a good experience with this club this semester.

UN Millennium Goals Presentation Artifact

GOALS <-Link to the Presentation 🙂

This artifact above is a picture from one of the slides of the presentation. It was a slide I made in the presentation for our Millennium goal which was Universal Education. We focused on Southeast Asia which was an “up and coming” area for this goal. I picked this very slide for many reasons but mainly because it was a great representation of the work done in Southeast Asia. Although the area still needs a lot of work on the subject area, these numbers are great statistics of growth in Universal Education.

This artifact is my personal slide from the presentation. When I was looking for information about this millennium goal, I was more impressed by the increases in education rather than the setbacks. I was impressed that even although the area still has a long way to go, the governments in the area were working towards the goal with incredible fineness.

I think that I definitely take the education in America for granted and I think that this project has definitely opened up my eyes to the fact that it should be more appreciated. But I am also astonished by the work that is being put forth in places that I didn’t think were able to grow without any help. I think this ties in well with international affairs because not only does it have to tie into the UN but also with just understanding the status of the world around us.
