Clinical Experience

So far my biggest challenge is avoiding politics when communicating with patients. One reason it is hard to avoid is because it seemed everyone was so interested in the impeachment trial and it was on every television of every room that I went into. However, I think the biggest reason why avoiding talking about  politics is such a challenge is because I strongly dislike politics altogether. I strongly dislike talking about politics. I strongly dislike hearing about politics. I strongly dislike seeing politics. I even strongly dislike thinking about politics. I dislike politics so much that I purposely try to put myself in situations were politics can be avoided. In my family when politics come up, I use the phase “How about them Astros” just as a cue to change the subject. That’s kind of my family signal to change the subject when someone doesn’t like the topic of conversation at hand. The only thing that I can think of to overcome this challenge is to use the phrase ” I don’t talk politics with my patients because I don’t want them to feel that my opinion on politics is influencing their care” that I learned in class. If this phrase isn’t enough then I still have yet to discover a solution.
