Review of Philosophy 2500: Symbolic Logic

I took Philosophy 2500 in the autumn semester of 2020. Dr. Tennant was my professor, and he was fantastic. He was very educated in the material and broke down complex ideas to make them much more easily understandable. I enjoyed this class because it taught me how to break down complex ideas in a logical way. Learning the formulas for valid and invalid arguments felt like getting the cheat codes to ideological debating. The material was both extremely important and something that I would assume that most people do not even know exists. At least I did not know it existed before taking the course. It was a difficult course, but I would recommend it to anyone as it has completely reshaped my thought process.

Sophomore Year in Review

Sophomore year was great. My grades have been good, the iGEM team received a gold medal as well as multiple special awards at the jamboree in November, and I started in the Hollick lab in January. I learned this year that my career goals require hard work, but are very achievable. I am excited to see what the future holds for me as I get deeper into my major courses and lab work. I am still happy with my molecular genetics major, and I also added a biochemistry major. Everything is going well. I am quite content with where I am at in life right now and also excited for the future.

Vision Statement and Statement of Action for Years 3 and 4

I see myself going to graduate school after I get my undergraduate degree. Because of this, I will spend a lot of time in the research lab through the next 2 years. I started in the Hollock lab this semester in the department of molecular genetics. I have enjoyed my time so far and will continue there for the next 2 years. Senior year, I hope to work on a senior thesis. I also plan to continue my work with the OSU iGEM team through the fall of my senior year. I hope to continue to raise my GPA, as my classes become more difficult through the next two years. I hope to graduate with majors in molecular genetics and biochemistry, minors in microbiology and philosophy, a senior thesis, and lab experience from both the Hollick lab and iGEM.

Elaboration on ‘Welcome to My Honors & Scholars e-Pportfolio’

In the About Me section, you will find general information about me including my hobbies, aspirations, and personality. In the Artifacts section, you will find images of things I hold valuable and descriptions of why. The Career section will show you how my professional life is developing. The G.O.A.L.S. category will show you how I fulfill the G.O.A.L.S. set forth by the OSU Honors & Scholars program. Lastly, the Year in Review category contains reflections from me at different points in my college career.

Finalized Piece of Work and What I Learned

This is the opening slide on a presentation for molecular genetics 5645: Quantitative, Population, and Evolutionary Genetics. The assignment was to choose a scientific research paper related to the course material, read it, make a presentation, and present to the class about the paper. This assignment helped me learn to read a scientific research paper and how to work with a person with whom I have never interacted before. This relates to my future goals because I want to get into the research field in the future, so being able to read and comprehend research papers is very important to my future.

Reflection of a Wesley Glen Service Experience (Spring 2020)

I greatly enjoyed my time volunteering at the Wesley Glen assisted living facility. My fellow Biological Sciences Scholars and I hosted and participated in BINGO games for and with the people living in Wesley Glen. It was a great time and hardly felt like service. Interacting with the senior citizens was a joy. Plus, who doesn’t love BINGO? Overall I had a great experience and I hope to continue attending Wesley Glen service events.

Freshman Year in Review

I had a great freshman year at OSU. I really enjoyed my coursework and am content with my major and path for the future. I feel I have changed quite drastically throughout the year as a student and a person. Since I have been interacting with more people from different backgrounds than mine, my opinions on different matters have changed drastically and my openness to new ideas and experiences has changed. I have also discovered my newfound interest in philosophy, something before college that I found useless and pretentious. My volunteer experiences through my first year in the Biological Sciences Scholars program have made me a more thoughtful and caring person. I wish the year had not ended so abruptly due to COVID, but I had a great time when I was on campus. I cannot wait for my sophomore year.

Career

Though I do not have a picture, I attended the med school student interview through the Biological Sciences Scholars program. This helped me in my career development in that I was unsure on whether or not I wanted to go to medical school, and that helped me realize that I do not want to go to medical school.
