HES Group Exploration

For our first assignment of the second semester, the group had to explore Columbus.  On this adventure, we went to Chop Shop to try their delicious milkshakes and buckets of fries.  The restaurant emulates the feeling of a sports bar with televisions everywhere broadcasting whatever sport is on for the night.  I ate their standard cheeseburger with a peanut butter and chocolate milkshake which was like tasting heaven for a buckeye lover like me.  From this experience, I learned that Columbus has great places all over the city, whether that be across town or close to home.  I would certainly recommend Chop Shop to others and I will try to make it back myself soon.

Exploring Columbus

From this experience of exploring Columbus, I have learned about all of the amazing dessert locations around the area.  I have been from down on 1st to up on Broadway.  I learned how the transit system works and I learned about all of the character in the communities surrounding campus.  Overall, the best food was Whit’s Frozen Custard by far.  I deeply enjoy ice cream and the custard was even better.  The excellent food has led me to want to explore some more sit down restaurants.  Short North has a ton of niche restaurants and eateries that I have never experienced.  My advice to someone completing a similar experience would be to make a day out of it.  Being a busy college student, I could not spare a whole day to go to a specific spot.  It would have been more fun to explore more stores that weren’t on the list.

Exploring Columbus #3

For the third and final exploring event, Cole, Teddy, and I went to Whit’s Frozen Custard.  We did run into one major problem with locating the store.  The website filled with the lists of locations to go around Columbus is not up to date with the Whit’s locations.  Instead of being in Short North, we had to go north of campus by about 2 miles.  Other than that, the custard was amazing.  I would recommend the chain to everybody.  The staff was polite and even took the group picture for us.  It was a cold trip home in the end as the buses took a solid 20 minutes to come, but all is well that ends well.

Exploring Columbus #2

I went to Rocket Fizz Candy Shop with Steven for my second exploration endeavor and had a great time.  We rode the #1 bus down to short north rather quickly and found the shop easily because it was right on High St.  It was really cool to see all of the types of odd pops that you could buy in the store.  One favorite that I saw was sweet corn flavored.  I ended up buying a six pack of various flavors and some German chocolate to bring home to the family before making the journey back to campus.  I would definitely

recommend the shop to friends.  It was fun and

reminiscent of childhood memories.

I bought this marker board about four weeks into my first semester as a freshman.  It has definitely been a good investment because, unlike notebook paper, it does not smear when tears of desperation hit it.  In all seriousness, the marker board has marked the upgrade in difficulty in math especially in college.  I was used to being top of my class in high school and college threw me for a loop.  The board also shows my newfound determination to study and solve equations.

Exploring Columbus

As part of our Humanitarian Engineering course, my fellow classmates and I were given a list of locations and activities to explore in the Columbus area.  I decided to follow my sweet tooth and delve into the Ice Cream and Desserts list. Out of all of the items on this list, Whit’s Frozen Custard is what captivates me most.  This is because, as a child, I would beg my parents to give me frozen custard which I found to be the most delectable of the frozen treats.  My hometown does not have a frozen custard venue, so Whit’s seems like the best opportunity to reconnect with my youth.  Through this experience, I hope to become a better navigator and to push myself to explore past the limits of campus to see what this great city has to offer.

My first experience was a trip to Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.  I chose this to be my first stop because I already had a sense of direction in that area of Short North.  After watching a blowout delivered to Maryland by the Ohio State football team, I decided to celebrate with a night on the town.  I took a trek over to High Street and caught the number 2 bus on down to Jeni’s.  Once there, I realized my mistake in going after a home game.  The line of customers stretched out the door and around the corner!  I decided to wait it out and jumped in line for some dairy delightfulness.  After waiting for half an hour, I finally reached the register and had some of the creamiest chocolate ice cream of my life.  While the ice cream was good, I would not suggest a return trip for college students.  I would much rather keep down costs and make home made ice cream with friends.  The most important suggestion would be if the line is extremely long, do not take too many samples.

Hunting – Being out in the wilderness has been a part of me since I could walk.  It is extremely important for me, as I make Ohio State my home, to remain connected to my roots.  Hunting gives me time to reconnect to nature and lets me be alone with perfect privacy which can be much needed in a college dorm.  It is a large part of my mental health as the difficulties of college overwhelm me.  This picture here is my bow just past sunrise during deer season.  I have roamed these woods as long as I can remember and never want to leave them behind.
