Our capstone is focused on Equitable Engagement in the Franklin County Metroparks System. In order to further “The Plan” set forth by the Columbus and Franklin County Metropolitan Park District, providing equitable, reliable and safe access to parks and services, the preferences of minority communities and all Franklin County residents must be considered, addressed, and represented in park planning and implementation.
The goal for our projects is:
“To work with our mentor and community members to develop achievable next steps and actions to broaden park engagement, increasing diversity and inclusion within the Franklin County Metroparks.”

Background
Created under the Ohio Revised Code Section 1545 “to conserve natural resources and provide natural area parks for people to enjoy” in 1945, Metro Parks are an independent political subdivision of the state of Ohio.
Dominantly funded by the 10-year, 0.95 million dollar levy passed in November of 2018, the Franklin County Metroparks System is dedicated to meeting taxpayer expectations while fulfilling their mission’s mandate to conserve open spaces, while providing places and opportunities that encourage people to discover and experience nature.
Focus Groups
For the purpose of our project and best serving those throughout The Greater Columbus Community, our research focuses on three main demographic groups: Disadvantaged Youth, The Disabled Community, and New Americans and Native Americans.
