Towards the end of the September I attended a Biological/Science scholars event joint with the STEM Scholars, in which two individuals from a start up Pharmaceutical Company spoke about their careers and how they ended up creating their start up company.  The students that attended the event  had the opportunity ask questions and this event was really interesting because I considering becoming Pre-Pharmacy, so hearing how these two individuals were able to create a start up company.  I was simply fascinated at how they did so and I was able to get answered to several questions that I had regarding Pharmaceuticals.

Year in Review

Throughout my time here so far at The Ohio State University I have grown as student leader and a peer-mentor in a few ways.  Such ways include tutoring fellow peers and friends in Calculus I since I have taken Calculus AB in high school and have prior knowledge of the subject. With this prior knowledge I was able to help my peers that I have met through my Morrill Scholars Program and peers in my dormitory, study for exams, quizzes, and help on homework.

Prior to joining the Biological/Science scholar program, I was mostly student that studied on his own and attempted to solve problems on my own. Also I used to volunteer on an irregular basis back in high school and being part of this scholar program has helped me change these habits. As I mentioned before, I came to realize that studying with multiple peers actually helps me reinforce the principals I already know, but at the sometime helps me further understand topics I am unsure about at the same time.  This program also helped me volunteer on a regular basis through volunteer events through the program as well as volunteer experiences that have been discussed in the program. As an out-of-state student to The Ohio State University, meeting people would be a difficult thing for me todo, but this program has proved otherwise. This program has also opened a window to allow to meet some great people such as fellow scholars and professionals in various areas of study that can all help me in the future. Some of the scholars I have met through this program are people I consider my closest friends and allowed for this campus to feel a lot smaller than it really is.  For this reason I am very grateful for this program and the opportunities that have a risen through it.  For this reason I find it very important for me to reflect on my experience thus far in the program due to the huge help it has provided me with in adjusting to being eight and half hours away from home at one of the largest schools in the nation.

G.O.A.L.S.

The GOALS concept developed by the Honors and Scholars programs are an essential way of creating a focus to get involved on campus by doing so in your own special interests. GOALS cover four distinct areas which are Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement.  Global Awareness deals partly with appreciating/understanding of various cultures (diversity) and I plan on doings so by hopefully studying abroad during the summer after my 2nd spring semester. Becoming part of a research team is what Original Inquiry is about and I hope to join a research team after this academic year once I have made enough connections through faculty here at OSU. I have always been strict on myself academically and intend on maintaining a GPA of 3.6 of higher, which fulfills the Academic Enrichment portion of the GOALs concept.  For the Leadership Development I intend holding a leadership role in the Morrill Scholarship Program. Volunteering is a very large part Biology/Science Scholar program in which we are required to have ten hours of community service during each semester, which is a directly related to the Service Engagement aspect of GOALs.

This is an image of the Grand Canyon that I took my phone while I was on a visit this past summer.  I realized how amazing this National Park is and caused me to want to help preserve landmarks like this around the world by hopefully volunteering at a landmark like this one at some point in my life.

About Me

My name is Luis Mercedes, and I live 20 minutes away from New York City in a small in town in New Jersey.  I came to OSU to get the experience of living away from home and being exposed to a whole new environment.  Sports in general have always been a huge part of my life, especially football. I played football for most of my life and it has helped shaped my work ethic in and out of school. In other words, I had to put everything I had into football in order to succeed and I translated the same idea to my studies.  As of right now, I am in the University Exploration program at OSU and I hope to figure out what field of study I plan to pursue in the future.
