Our Goal
Mental health is a prominent part of a person’s life and mental health illnesses affect so many people worldwide. There is often times a stigma associated with mental health. Not many people like to talk about mental health or its affects on people. They tend to brush off the subject and the signs and symptoms that may occur. Coming to college can be an overwhelming and stressful event, especially for freshmen. There’s a lot of stress that can come from it which has the possibility to lead to mental health problems. That’s why we feel it is important to help raise awareness for mental health and get away from the negative stigma. We want everyone to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a mental illness and be able to get the help that they need.
Our Project
Our project aims to teach college students, especially freshmen, the importance of maintaining positive mental health. Through our workshops incoming college students will get the resources they need in order to seek help on Ohio States campus if they need it. The workshop will be taught by a faculty member and will consist of a powerpoint presentation, a worksheet, and a take home pamphlet for students to keep with them for their entire college career. This website will also serve as a helpful tool for students to seek resources if they need help. We believe that our program will help students:
- recognize the characteristics associate with unhealthy mental health and identify symptoms of a mental illness
- determine when it is necessary to seek help for a mental health related problem
- choose at least one positive mental health habit among many that they will do if needed
- practice the mental health habit that they chose
