Reflection on GOALS

I have promoted global awareness by traveling to Ethiopia and volunteering at schools and clinics. From these experiences I have learned a lot about what it means to be a global citizen. Before, I did not really understand that at the end of the day we are all members of the same race and all inhabit the same planet. It can be easy to be sucked up into politics and borders, but at the end of the day we are more similar than we are different. I plan to continue working towards this goal by traveling abroad to places in Europe. I plan on using money from step to help fund this process.

Currently I am involved in a lab that deals with the effects of stem cells on multiple scoliosis. I have learned that research is a slow, but rewarding process. My time in the lab has led me to pursue more experiences that revolve around the research process.

My honors contract demonstrates a commitment to my goal of academic enrichment because all of my classes are rigorous. All of my classes are also in subjects that I have interests in. I wish to become a medical doctor and because of this most of my classes revolve around my future education. I am taking classes that will prepare me for medical school. I am interested in neuro-degenerative diseases and as a result I am taking classes that go in depth with the many diseases. I have selected these GE coursed because I am interested in them. For example AF AFAM 3083 deals with the black power movements and the civil rights area. This class is not needed for med school, but I still took it because it is of interest to me.

I have been heavily involved in mentor-ship programs on campus. My involvement has contributed to me as a leader because I have learned the value of servant leadership. A good leader is not always someone who pushes forward, but is someone who stops, listens, and understands.

I partake in service when ever I can. I have partaken in a buck-i-serve trip to Lexington, Kentucky that revolved around hunger, poverty, and education. I plan on participating in a global health initiative to Guatemala this summer.

Global Awareness:

I intend on working toward the goal of global awareness by traveling abroad during the summer of my sophomore year. I want to travel to Africa and parts of Europe in order to volunteer. I also want to take how to stage a revolution in order to learn more about the important revolutions that played important roles in forming other countries governments. I will also join the Ethiopian and Eritrean student organization here on campus.

Original Inquiry:

I plan on getting involved with research here on campus. I really want to get involved with research on Alzheimer’s. I also want to take the class that teaches you to build holograms. I plan on taking several courses that are advanced.

Academic Enrichment

I will use my Academic plan to create a program of study that serves my academic and professional interests and needs by picking classes that will help me to become the best physician I can possibly be. I chose my major of Neuroscience because I am generally intrigued about the brain, I also chose my major because I would one day like to find a cure to a disease that affects the brain. I am most excited about the course on the Black Civil Rights movement and Black Power because I believe that these are two very important movements that have helped to propel the African American people from slavery to know. Also I think it is important for everyone to know their history and I believe that the black power movement is a part of my history. My course selections demonstrate a commitment to developing a program that goes beyond minimum requirements because I am taking a large range of courses. I did not just limit myself to classes that only deal with medicine. I am planning on taking classes that will help to expand the horizon of my brain and ultimately help better the way I look at things.

Leadership Development:

As of right now I am a member of the Undergraduate Student Government here at OSU. I serve as a member on the committee of Academic Affairs. As of right know I am working with others to help to make the university more transparent when it comes to where the students money is being allocated. I am also trying to spread the news that there are more than just two libraries here on campus. I plan on using the skills from these two projects in order to start my own, which will be to inform students about the free tutoring that the university offers here on campus. My goal is to eliminate the extra money students have to spend on tutors, when there is tutoring offered for free on the university.

Service Engagement

As of right know I am not really involved in a lot of service, however I do want that to change. I am planning to become involved in mentor a buckeye, which is where a current student is paired up with a freshman in high school and is given the opportunity to mentor the child.
