Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I plan on cultivating global awareness in both my own perspective and the campus community as a whole by engaging more with various cultures. I have a strong interest in the Japanese language and culture and my course work further in my OSU career will further explore this culture through culture, language, and literature classes. I also plan to explore other cultures through further study. I plan to bring diversity to campus by further advocating for minority rights, and by participating in student organizations designed to bring awareness to minority issues.

Original Inquiry: I have already  begun to pursue original inquiry through cancer research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at OSU. I have a strong desire to gain a greater understanding of the mechanisms of cancer so that I can push the boundaries of treatment as a physician. I plan to use OSU’s various research resources — such as the Undergraduate Research Organization — to find interesting and varied opportunities to further expand my knowledge of the human body.

Academic Enrichment: I plan to pursue academic excellence through my study of Neuroscience. I have always found the human body fascinating, but have always found the superficial curriculum of other majors lacking. The Neuroscience major at OSU provides a rigorous set of classes that allows for specialization within the major. I am also excited to continue my study of Japanese through the excellent Japanese department at OSU.

Leadership Development: I plan on becoming a leader in the medical community in the future by laying the groundwork in undergrad. By pursuing research in brain cancer and studying neuroscience, I hope to begin publishing research in undergrad to help further the field, and to pursue the cutting edge of treatment to better improve patient outcomes. I plan to present research at various undergraduate conferences to establish myself in medical academia.

Service Engagement: I hope to become involved in service through volunteering at various clinics and hospitals. I firmly believe that the most meaningful impact an individual can make on another’s life is to improve their health, so I plan on heavily pursuing volunteer opportunities involved in the health field. Free clinics are especially exciting because these establishments lower the barrier of entry to improve one’s health. By involving myself in these service opportunities, I plan on improving my community’s health care institutions.
