25. Start to doodle and using your imagination allow it to grow.
For this prompt there was this link, What Do Ernest Hemingway, Queen Victoria, and Marlon Brando Have in Common? They Were Dedicated Doodlers—See Their Work Here | Artnet News to look at for inspiration. However I would have to say that my drawing was inspired by an animal called a black volitan lionfish. It is a lionfish with black and white markings rather than the orange and white markings.
Now I know doodle means ” scribble absentmindedly,” my “doodles” are end up looking like a planned sketch… Most of the time I end up doodling merpeople while I wait for things sometimes with basic references for my to check anatomy, whether in class or at a coffee shop or even just passing the time during an ad on T.V.. The one that I started for this sketchbook though I really loved the look of and so I started adding color. I actually started this drawing the first week of class, but I only just finished the coloring on the one part of the sketch as I’ve been pretty busy. If I color the other parts I will update the images here and show that I have done so.
I have included a closer image of the main drawing, as I wrote very tiny notes to myself as I was drawing. They were more of markings notes for myself to make sure I kept the drawing how it started, if I lost a line while coloring parts. The color is watercolor pencils, which I then used a water pen to smooth out except the black which I wet the pencil to get a dark color with lots of pigment.
For this merman, I wanted to use a black volitan lionfish for a reference for the markings and the types of fins. Below my WIP images I will also include some of the ones I’ve done previously as I think they are very fun to draw!
The next drawings below are other merpeople I’ve sketched/doodled I draw them quite often… and sometimes no one sees them so I figured I add them at the end here:
All of the ones on the little cards to the right I did at work, with a water soluble pencil for the linework, and then I would color them when I got home or had time on the weekend with watercolor colored pencils.
The drawing below is from while I was at a coffee shop waiting for some friends to show up and I continued to draw it while we talk about things, it was drawn with just a regular mechanical pencil.
