“The Secret of Drawing” Episode 1: “The Line of Enquiry”

I found it very interesting to see the way that Cardiac surgeon Dr. Francis Wells uses drawing.  I have personally always like sketchier lines in drawings as it shows how the artist was thinking through the drawing and what was important about the drawing itself.  As the documentary says “to draw is to look and look again,” I would really agree with because it is how artists make realistic and interesting drawings.  The paper museum is very interesting, I am amazed at how well preserved the drawings are.  I have always been interested in George Stubbs work as I personally found it interesting at how well and realistic that he was able to draw/paint horses which is one of the most complex animals to draw from an anatomy point.  How closely he was able to study horses was revolutionary due to how detailed it really was.  David Russels work is very interesting and look stunning even next to photographs, each pencil stroke shows at least to me just how interested in the moon he was.  The care that he put into drawing the details of every crater of the moon.  The story of John Audubon and how he worked with birds, shooting them and then preserving the birds is stunning, to make the drawings life size and so well colored and detailed (like his drawing of the female turkey) is beautiful.  He makes an interesting composition while showing different “faces/sides” of the birds as a result the drawings look alive.    Overall I thought that this video was a very interesting look into different artists that create works that really show importance of art and drawing itself.
