For this homework there was a big big list of artists to choose from. The assignment was to choose seven artists that I looked at and talk about three who were interesting to me, the following is what I turned in;
I looked at many of the artists from the list, seven of these artists were. The assignment said that I needed to write about 3 of them, but I had five that I wanted to say something about;
Anni Albers – I like the play with colors and simplicity of the geometric designs that come together to create a complex design over all. It catches the eye while still being in concept a “simple” idea. A couple of the pieces actually make me think of coding written out in sections or seismograph read outs (earthquake activity read outs).
Arthur Rackham – I was particularly interested in Rackham’s work. I love the realistic look even with the fantasy characters and creatures. Using what looks like black and white pen with some color pieces as well. Work like Arthur Rackham’s pieces are what I have always aspired to achieve in works myself, because there is so much depth and character.
Louise Bourgeois – This artist caught my eye because of the strange nature of her drawings, her sculptures actually caught my eye because they reminded me of a Japanese horror manga artist named Junji Ito. I like her pieces that are closer to that horror style of her work as they are very interesting in the way that she plays with the form of the subject.
Unica Zurn – I love the line work and the “looser” drawing style that she uses, it is very interesting how she layers lines on top of each other to create these piece. It reminds me of what is called “Zentangling/Zentangle” There are so many options for different values using this method of drawing, I allow like the simple uses of color throughout rather than using color in specific areas.
Alberto Giacometti – I love the scratch style of his portraits, they end up being very dark but when you look close you can see every form and shade within those drawings.
