Homework 12 – The Secret of Drawing 3 – All in the mind

For this assignment I had to watch “The Secret of Drawing 3,” and then write a response about what I had watched:

While watching the video “’The Secret of Drawing’ Episode 3: ‘All In The Mind’ 2005” out of the many artists named, I found the following three the most interesting.  James Gillray was the first that caught my eye I liked the almost freedom that he had while applying the ink to create the figures, as it ends up making not just figures, but characters who have depth and that in certain parts get lost in all the random lines work much as a person can get lost in their day-to-day life.  The next artist to catch my eye was Sarah Simblet, I love her approach to teaching, and would love to take a class of hers if I ever have the opportunity because I strongly agree with her approach to art, and the different styles that she both draws in and encourages others to express using drawing.  The art can be either very precise and technical or very loose and open it all depends on how the artist feels when creating a piece and what their overall approach to the piece is.  The third artist that really caught my eye was Francesco de Traini, while the way that they found the underdrawings is very unfortunate I believe that these drawings are also revolutionary in their own right. To see the underdrawings which in a sense were the purest form of the original idea for the painting for the painting that goes over it, the top painting will of course lose some of that emotion and detail as it is now being painting over the original piece.  I know there are people, myself included that will spend a long time on an under drawing/painting and really love the result but when the full piece is done it feels like something is missing.  In the case of this underdrawings to me it really seems that the full and raw emotions that didn’t come through in the final painting over are finally seen by people other than those who where there or saw it being drawn/painted.  Nadia Chomyn is also very interesting, as to me drawing has always been a way for people to communicate and she shows through her way of communicating ideas, what I have always thought, if words can not be understood or communicated imagery and gestures are next in line.  I also thought that Michael Landy had an interesting creative process when he did “breakdown” I know its never something I could do but I understand why someone would do it to further their understanding of art.  Sometimes the hardest thing in art is starting over or knowing when to stop working on something etc. so to wipe the entire slate clean and start as though a new artist, with no works to your name is a very interesting and daunting idea.
