DEA Requirement for 8 Hours of CME on Addiction Medicine — OSU MedNet21 Can Help. In response to the opioid crisis, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) now requires all DEA-registered practitioners to complete a one-time, 8-hour training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This requirement, effective June 27, 2023, applies to all clinicians applying for or renewing their DEA registration.

This training aligns with the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, a key federal initiative aimed at equipping clinicians with the knowledge to better manage addiction and reduce drug-related harm.

CME Webcast Teaches How to Approach Chronic Back Pain.  This program will cover a biopsychosocial approach to chronic back pain. The first presenter will discuss multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary treatment approaches to chronic low back pain. She will then discuss some of the common medications used for treatment. The next presenter will discuss the role of psychology/psychotherapy in treatment for chronic low back pain, with a particular emphasis on how psychology providers work with others in an interdisciplinary treatment team. Finally, the last presenter will discuss various strategies for treating patients with chronic low back pain to improve their overall function, coping, mobility, and quality of life.

For this program, we’ve brought together three smart and talented Ohio State University’s experts from the Pain Rehabilitation and Education: Values and Actions that Improve Life or PREVAIL clinic. These brilliant women work together as an interdisciplinary team to treat chronic back pain through a biopsychosocial approach. First, we have the pleasure of introducing Christina McGhee who is a Doctor of Nursing. Next, we have Lora Black who is a PhD in Psychology, and finally joining us is have Lauren Tiemeier who is a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

Experts Teach On Inpatient Buprenorphine Use for Pain Management. This program will cover the topic of inpatient use of Buprenorphine for pain management. The presenters will first review the pharmacology of Buprenorphine including its mechanism of action and safety profile. They will discuss practical applications for using Buprenorphine for pain management as well as common dosing and routes of administration. They will use case studies to illustrate use cases scenarios and finally will also review limitations and logistics for coverage and continuation of these medications beyond the hospital setting.

To share why and how to effectively use this medicine in our hospitalized patients, we’re excited to introduce our two guests today. First, we have Dr. James Brehany, who is an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and specializes in Geriatrics and Palliative Care at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Our other guest is Dr Jennica Johns. Jennica is also an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and specializes in both Palliative care and Pulmonary Critical Care.
