Learn About Maternal Morbidity and Mortality on Webcast

OSU Wexner Medical Center logo Learn About Maternal Morbidity and Mortality on Webcast. Since 2000, maternal mortality in the US has doubled and has been exacerbated in recent years by the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, globally, maternal mortality declined 38% from 2000-2017. A 2023 JAMA report shows that not only have we seen maternal death rates double in the last 20 years but there are significant disparities among American Indians, Alascan natives and Black individuals. The rate of maternal deaths among Black women in the US is the highest of all racial groups and is nearly 3 times the rate of maternal deaths for white women. We’re based in Ohio and the Midwest and Southern regions are two that are particularly affected.

So what can we do about this? That’s why we’ve invited our guest today Dr Cynthia Shellhaas. Dr Shellhaas is a introduce Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center specializing in Maternal Fetal Medicine. Additionally, she has a masters in public health and is the medical director fo the Bureau of Child and Family Health Services in the Ohio Department of Health where she works at the state level designing maternal child health programs.
