A toast for example is a common part of weddings. But alcohol, we now know has numerous negative effects. Alcohol can damage the heart, the liver, and is linked to numerous cancers. It can be consumed to excess and can lead to dependency and life-threatening withdrawal. So, how do we as physicians balance the common and important societal uses of alcohol with the negative health impacts and guide our patients to avoid and treat unhealthy alcohol use?

For this topic, we’ve invited a national leader of Alcohol Use Screening and intervention who happens to be here at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. We are pleased to introduce Professor of Internal Medicine Dr Daniel Jonas. Dan is the division director of General Internal Medicine here at Ohio State.

With the vast number of procedures performed each day, it is not always possible or necessary to have an anesthesiologist available to oversee sedation. Proceduralists can and do provide their own sedation while performing the procedure. On this webcast, we will review the very important topic of Moderate and Deep sedation. Here at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, a variety of specialists such as gastroenterologists, cardiologists, pulmonologists and more may view today’s program and complete the post-test to help obtain and maintain their hospital sedation privileges.

We’ve invited two guests on the program today. First, we have Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and director of Ambulatory Perioperative Services, Dr. Jarrett Heard. We also have Kristin Brower, Doctor of pharmacy and specialty practice pharmacist at Ohio State specializing in perioperative services where she works alongside both Anesthesiologists and Surgeons to care for patients.

In your medical training, you don’t always get much education on oral health and pathology, but disease of the mouth are extremely common. For example, worldwide, dental caries is the single most common chronic condition affecting 2.5 billion people. Nearly a billion people also have severe gum disease. And, many patients do not have a dental home meaning they often present to physicians for oral complaints. A 2003 study showed that in a 4 year period, there were nearly 3 million Emergency Department visits in the United States for dental complaints. There are of course many other conditions that can affect the mouth than dental caries or broken teeth.

For this webcast, we’ve invited two of Ohio State University’s Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology experts to discuss common Oral pathology. We’re pleased to introduce Associate Professor of Dentistry Dr Kristin McNamara and Professor of Dentistry, Dr John Kalmar.
