OSU Wexner Medical Center logo Expert Teaches on Lymphedema. Although congenital lymphedema remains rare, other causes of lymphedema are increasingly common. Until recently, there was little to be done for patients with lymphedema other than compression garments but as we are going to see today, there are revolutionary new surgical techniques that are offering life-changing improvements in their conditions. Here in the studio to tell us about new treatments for lymphedema is Professor of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Roman Skoracki. Dr. Skoracki is the Division Chief of Oncologic Plastic Surgery at the Ohio State University and is also the Medical Director of the OSU Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center.

To discuss Hepatocellular carcinoma in more detail, we’ve invited one of Ohio State University’s experts. Dr. Lanla Conteh is an Associate Professor of Medicine, specializing in Transplant Hepatology. She directs the Hepatobiliary Tumor Program at OSU, and if that weren’t enough, she also researches Hepatocellular Carcinoma and disparities in patients with liver disease. On this webcast, she will be reviewing the epidemiology, treatment and prevention strategies for Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

In 1909 Swiss physician Theodor Kocher won the Nobel Prize for developing safer techniques for removing the thyroid, bringing down the thyroidectomy mortality rate to <1%. Now, thyroidectomies are primarily used to treat thyroid cancers. To discuss thyroid and parathyroid tumors and their workup and treatment, We have with us one of Ohio State University’s experts Dr Priya Dedhia. Dr Dedhia is an Assistant Professor of Surgical Oncology and specializes in Endocrine Surgeries.

OSUWexnerbloglogo2014 Expert Teaches on Peripheral Vascular Disease. In the United States today, the majority of amputations are done to treat complications of vascular disease such as from Diabetes. The good news is, recent research shows the rates of amputation in diabetic patients is decreasing. The true rate of Peripheral Arterial Disease is very difficult to assess since most patients are asymptomatic but the CDC estimates approximately 6.5 million Americans have Peripheral Arterial Disease. Here to discuss more about the pathophysiology of PAD as well as the variety of treatment options—which thankfully no longer hinge on amputation—is one of Ohio State University’s Vascular Surgery experts. We’re pleased to introduce Assistant Professor of Vascular Surgery Dr. Kate Peng.
