The American Association of Poison Control Centers manages a 24-hour hotline that is staffed by healthcare professionals with training in toxicology. Each year, U.S. poision control centers get more than 2 million calls about poison exposures, that works out to 1 poisoning every 15 seconds. Although poisonings still are most common in children between the ages of 1 and 3 years old, poisonings can and do occur in people of all ages. Therefore, it is important for all physicians who provide clinical care to patients to be familiar with the common causes of poisoning. Joining our webcast today to update you about poisoning is Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Jennifer Yee.
