September Reflection

An interesting that I have learned so far is from our Scholars Seminar class, from today actually, when Brett explained how highway numbering worked and how to efficiently use a compass. Those two lessons will stay with me for a very long time, I can tell already. What should be intuitive in a way, I for sure have not thought about either of those topics enough to efficiently put them into practice.

One thing I have learned about myself recently is that I am open to change. Before coming into college I had always hated change. I liked the idea of a constant normal and a regular schedule. But, since going through quarantine, I knew change was inevitable and realized it was my mindset that had to change. I am now very spontaneous, and most of my best memories as of late have come from last minute decisions with my friends, and I would not want it any other way.

Lately, I have been struggling with time management. Throughout high school I tended to put assignments off until the last minute. However, now in college I am realizing how much of a bad habit that really is (I knew it was bad, but now it’s worse). I am slowly starting to fix my old routine and find new ways to motivate myself to get work done. One is by rewarding myself with a break outside, whether that be a walk around buckeye grove, a run by the river, or a chill nap in my hammock.

Something that I have achieved, you could call it, is a hand full of lifelong friendships. My suitemates and the people on my floor (Floor 10 for the win!) have been so inclusive and amazing since the day I moved in. In fact, on my very first night, along with many others who also moved in on the same day, we had a small gathering my suite’s common room. I was finally able to connect so many faces to the names of people in the scholars slack group chat. It was so welcoming to be able to move right into a community of people I had already met, albeit virtually. Morrill tower is definitely doing a lot of things right in forming a family of forever friends. <3

About Me

Hey! My name is Hallie Meadows and I’m from Newark, Ohio, not too far east of Columbus. I’m a first-year chemical engineering pre-major at The Ohio State University, and I’m also involved with the Environment and Natural Resources Scholars program

OSU has been a dream school of mine for as long as I can remember. Not to mention the huge influence that my family of alumni and major Buckeye fan base has created over the years.

As for the mix of chemical engineering and pro-environment? I have found a love for chemistry, no matter how hard it gets, over the past two years in high school. I can dedicate that to my teacher, Mrs. Wartenbee (love you lots <3) for helping me through all of its challenges and making it one of my favorite classes.

For the environment part, I will say part of why I chose ENR Scholars was because we were supposed to do so many activities, like hiking, camping, and canoeing (many favorites) throughout the year. I knew that it would be a great way to step away from heavy schoolwork and get outside, but still benefit educationally from every trip. In fact, ENR was my second choice program; I had actually selected the Engineering program as my number one, but I am so thankful they did not accept me because I would not change a thing about where I am today. The group of people I have met and the experiences I’ve had so far from this program far exceeds my expectations! I am super looking forward to later on (post-COVID) where we can get out and do more fun stuff outside as a big group!

In high school I ran cross country and track, and joined swim my senior year. I am so grateful to have been involved with those teams because I formed many of my close friendships there. Now in college, I joined the OSU Running Club, and I have loved being able to run with a new group of people!

Outside of school, I love to water ski, kayak, and be outside in general. I used figure skate competitively and I competed in FIRST FTC Robotics through high school. I also earned my Gold Award in Girl Scouts, creating a garden and lesson plans for a local elementary school in order to promote healthy eating and encourage kids to make their own gardens at home to be able to have easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables. This project was an introduction to realizing that I wanted to continue advocating for sustainable living in the future.

With my family, I grew up traveling and camping quite frequently. I am fortunate enough to say that I’ve been to all 50 states and several National Parks in both the States and Canada! I absolutely love visiting the parks, and I think that my support and environmental interest started from seeing how much of an impact they can have on protecting the beauty of the natural world. I firmly believe that there is an answer to “saving the planet” and sustainability, and I want to learn more about it in this program over the next few years!

Go Bucks! 🙂
