BNRC Experience

The week before classes began last semester I participated in the BNRC (Bell National Resource Center) early arrival program. This program was intended for African-American freshmen males at the university to promote togetherness and brotherhood. During this time there were many events ranging from professional lectures, a campus wide scavenger hunt, a basketball tournament and information sessions about the different resources on campus. This experience helped form a brotherhood between us all and allowed me to get some great friends.

The artifact pictured below is a white t-shirt with portions of red and black on it. The shirt has the official name of the BNRC along with the abbreviated name. It also has its motto on it which says “Iron Sharpens Iron”. I got this shirt on the last day of the early arrival program from the course coordinator. This is the significant to me because whenever I look at or wear it I am reminded of all the fun I had, great people I met and lessons I learned at the early arrival program.

About Me

Hello everyone, my name is Jonathan Meade and I am a first-year student at The Ohio State University. Originally from Woodbridge, Virginia, I wanted to come to the best school in the nation to uphold the family tradition, excel academically and have the best time of my life. Some of my interests include playing sports, working out, traveling, playing video games, cooking and going to Ohio State football games. During my high school years I took advantage of some of my interests and leadership skills by being a platoon leader of my Navy Junior ROTC unit where I commanded a group of 30 students through inspections, physical training and athletic events. I was also a part of the Future Business Leaders of America where I organized and participated in multiple events while competing in many competitions all year long. This experience made me realize that my true passion was in business and is why I am currently majoring in business with a specialization in finance. My interest in the business world has encouraged me to apply and eventually get accepted into the business scholars program here at Ohio State. This two-year commitment has already granted me plenty of opportunities like providing company and site visits, having etiquette dinners and putting me in contact with older individuals who were on the same path as me just a few years ago. I have also gotten involved in Black Student Association and Undergraduate Finance Association during my time here at The Ohio State University. These experiences have allowed me to form great friendships and have assisted in my personal and professional development. Throughout my next three years at Ohio State I would like to get accepted into a competitive business club, obtain multiple internships, study abroad and have a leadership position in a club that I am involved in. Following my graduation, I hope to work for a top financial services company like Goldman Sachs where I can make a comfortable salary and later create my own  sports management business.

Year in Review

My second year at The Ohio State University has been the most rewarding yet challenging time in my life so far. Entering fall semester, I was very excited because football season was approaching and because this would be the first semester where I would be taking upper level classes in the Fisher College of Business. With these more advanced classes came a need for more studying, effort and responsibility. Thankfully, I succeeded in balancing my schedule after I realized that I was going to have to adjust my mindset in order to succeed. Academically, second semester was a lot easier as I had grown accustomed to managing my time more efficiently and productively.
However, as my academics grew easier my professional involvement grew increasingly stressful. One of my main goals coming into my second year was to obtain a financial analyst’s internship with a Fortune 500 company for the upcoming summer. To ensure that I would achieve my goal I had to make sure my grades were competitive and that I was involved in my college community. As a result, I participated more in clubs such as the Undergraduate Finance Association and Morrill Scholars Program and kept my GPA above a 3.6. Once I began the application process for different companies I got a little overwhelmed by all the interviewing I had to do but luckily it paid off and I landed an internship with UnitedHealth Group in Washington, D.C. Even though I thought the process was a bit stressful I’m happy I went through with it because it paid off in the end and I increased my work ethic in the process.
Socially, this year was very fun and filled with many new experiences and opportunities. I thoroughly enjoyed attending my first Ohio State vs Michigan game in the Horseshoe. I will never forget the atmosphere that was present in that stadium and I’m glad we came away with the win. I also enjoyed attending the JPMorgan Chase Sophomore Edge Program in Chicago, Illinois where I met and interacted with other high-achieving business students from around the country. Overall, my sophomore year of college has taught me a lot and I can’t wait for year 3!
