Columbus To Do List #1

My peer mentor group and I went to Kafe Kerouac in the neighborhood of Old North Columbus on October thirtieth. My group decided that this would be a cool place to explore because it is an area of Columbus none of had explored much, and it could even become an area where could study in the future if we were want to get off campus. I enjoyed how interesting the inside of the building was, with a small serving bar to make coffee, and serve the customers. I thought it was cool how there were cheap books that you could buy everywhere in the store, as well as old records, and graphic novels. The only thing that felt a little strange about the coffee shop was how it was divided into two sections, but it gave it more room for sitting, also there was a stage that I imagine they use for bands. From the experience our group ;earned about the different places we could explore that are not on campus, where we could just get away from the academic pressures on campus and relax for a time. I think next time when looking for a place to go, our group would look for a place that would offer a place that offers more than just a coffee shop, or a place where we could have more fun in Columbus like, a park, or Nationwide Arena. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend as a place to relax and do some homework, or meet up to have a conversation with a friend.

Columbus To Do List #2

On November 27th Sage and I went to Coffee Underground which is located in the basement of the Indianola Church of Christ, on the corner of Indianola Ave and Norwich Ave. We had to walk through the cold wind, and sin to make it to Cofee Underground which is roughly 0.6 miles away from Drackett Tower. Upon arriving we saw that it was in the basement of the building, and it provides a great atmosphere for relaxing with friends, or trying to study for exams. The shop was decorated for the Christmas season, so it provided a calming festive feeling. I really enjoyed the relaxed environment it provides to students, however it is a long distance to walk from Drackett in the cold. Next time, I will definitely bring my computer, so I can work on homework and study. I would recommend this place, as I look forward to returning soon.

Artifacts

Artifact #1: Hockey

Hockey has always been a huge part of my life since I began to play in the fifth grade. I have learned so much about hard work, teamwork, and commitment, that the sport has truly shaped the person that I am today.  Hockey has been a way that I could develop and grow into a leader who can be confident in their decisions. I learned that often the most effective leader is the one who works to earn the respect of their teammates, and always gives their best effort for their team, no matter what the situation in the game. This method of servant leadership is something that I try to apply to every aspect of my life, where I try to work and accomplish things the right way. The game is something that truly brings me joy, and it is something that I hope will continue to bring me joy into my future.

Artifact #2: Faith

My faith is something that I’ve always taken very seriously and it something that I care about very much. Through Cru at Ohio State, I have been able to be a part of a christian community that supports me in my faith, as well as encourages me to learn from others in their beliefs as well. Cru provides an opportunity for me to have a community at Ohio State that I can identify with, and that can support me through my academic and social experience at the university. My faith has taught me to put others before myself, and I believe that this is one of the main reasons that I chose Humanitarian engineering, since I will have the opportunity to help people who may not have the resources necessary to improve their situation. Faith is a major part of who I am, and a guiding principle with who I want to be.

About Me

My name is Bayley McRitchie, and I am from Medina, Ohio. Most of my interests come from being active outside with activities such as hiking, and running, but I also love to watch and play sports especially Ice Hockey, which I played throughout my childhood, high school, and even intramural here in college. I am currently planning to study biochemistry on the pre-med track here at OSU.  I chose to study biochemistry because it seems to guide my interests down a path that would increase my knowledge of the way the world works on a small scale that can make a large impact in a person’s everyday life. I think an avenue to help achieve this impact is going on to become a doctor where I can help people, and solve problems that they face all across the world. With the idea of impacting the world, I am a part of Humanitarian Engineering Scholars here at Ohio State, and this group seeks to solve problems from a perspective of helping the people in the world who may not have the skills, or resources to solve those problems they face. I believe that with the principles I learn through this program, and the resources I am exposed to here at OSU I can truly make the impact that I strive to create.

My top Five Strengths:

Context: In the context strength a person lets their lessons from the past influence their decisions and plans to the future. This strength definitely plays a role in my life because I find myself basing a vast majority of my decisions of my own past experiences, or the experiences others have had, so I know how to best approach the problem.

Restorative: This trait concerns a person who enjoys identifying the sources of the problem and the solutions to those problems. This trait definitely plays a strong role in my decision to become a doctor because seeing how doctors are faced with problems, and how they identify the symptoms, and move forward to solve the problem.

Achiever: I am a person who strives to be the best I can be, and makes extremely competitive towards others, but especially against myself. Whenever a day goes by, and I feel nothing is accomplished, I feel that is a day wasted, so I try to have something to work on in order to keep myself focused and driven.

Responsibility: With the things I commit I try to complete them to the best of my ability in order to make others happy, as well as knowing that I myself did a good job. I enjoy knowing that I can be the guy that people will come to when they need help with a problem, and I will try my best to help them.

Input: I love to know things, and I love collecting and growing in my knowledge and experiences. This is one of the reasons I love reading because in reading I can learn new things that I can store and use later to help with new problems in the future.
