Artifact: ACES Film Project

In my first year as an Advocates for Communities and Education Scholar, I collaborated on a film project in which my group viewed and analyzed the film The Hunting Ground. The purpose of this project was to connect our film to the four ACES pillars. The purpose of the film was to raise awareness of the rape and sexual assault epidemic on college campuses in America, so we were easily able to connect the film to the pillars of positive social change, advocacy, community, and service. The film was also easy to connect to our lives because we are female students living on a college campus, the most likely victims of sexual assault or sexual harassment. This made the project important to us, as we realize how crucial the film was to convince colleges to take rape more seriously. It inspired me to advocate more for victims of sexual assault, especially on college campuses.

About Me

Hello! I’m Abby McNickle, a first year student from Portland, Connecticut studying at The Ohio State University. I am an ACE scholar and majoring in Integrated Language Arts/English Education with a minor in Theatre. I plan to pursue a Master’s in education and following my graduation, I intend to apply to the Peace Corps to teach English as a second language abroad. Once I have served in the Peace Corps, I hope to teach English to eleventh and twelfth graders. I am passionate about using culturally diverse literature to spark discussion and broaden perspectives and I hope to share my passion for literature with my future students. I am devoted to inclusion, equity, and social justice, so I strive to be continually learning along with my students.

Currently, I am involved in several campus organizations. Through 1girl, I mentor a group of middle school girls with a curriculum focused on improving leadership capability. In the Literacy Improvement Track, I facilitate a small group of international students who are working to improve their English speaking and listening skills. I feel this program gives me good experience for teaching English as a second language. I am involved in the Peer Theatre facet of Off the Lake Productions, a student-led theatre company on campus. In Off the Lake, I also stage manage for the Night of One Acts. I hope to continue my involvement in these organizations throughout my time at Ohio State!
