Even though the Taiwan authors San Mao and Qiong Yao are known for quite different types of writing, they have often been discussed together as a pair. This paper attempts to account for the persistent connection between the 2, and offers a discussion of some issues concerning literary genres and the hierarchies that may have helped to determine the positioning of San Mao and Qiong Yao in literary classification systems..
