The position should be filled as soon as possible. Depending on the qualifications of the appointee, the professorship will take the form of a tenured full or associate professorship, or an assistant professor­ship with tenure track.

The focus of the chair to be filled lies on the Chinese-speaking world, in particular the People’s Republic of China and its rapidly growing international importance as a cultural, political and economic actor. Based on a high competence in original language sources, the appointee is expected to be capable of integrating cultural and social science aspects of contemporary Chinese studies into their research and teaching.

A PhD in Sinology/Chinese Studies completed at the time of application, or in a social science discipline, as long as equivalent China competencies can be proven, is required. Excellent skills in Modern Man­darin, as well as outstanding, internationally recognized research publications are a prerequisite. Rele­vant teaching experience, a track record in the acquisition of third-party funding, and academic admin­istration skills are expected. Applicants are also required to show a pronounced readiness for scholarly cooperation in contexts of transdisciplinary research and teaching, both within the University of Zurich and with national and international partners, and a willingness to engage with civil society. The future incumbent is expected to teach courses in German and English within three years of starting the posi­tion. USC teaching-track position

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and the East Asian Studies Center in the Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, invite applications for a full-time teaching-track faculty position in East Asian cultural studies, with a preferred focus on China and its interregional connections.

We welcome applications from candidates working in any period or discipline related to the study of China and its interregional connections. The successful applicant will teach five courses per year, including two large general education courses for the East Asian Studies Center (EASC 150gp East Asian Societies and EASC 160mgp China and the World) and three upper-division undergraduate courses in East Asian Languages and Cultures. The new hire is also expected to serve on thesis committees of students enrolled in the East Asian Area Studies M.A. program. The position will begin August 2023 and is renewable after the initial three-year term.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant area by the start of the appointment, and must demonstrate research and teaching excellence in the relevant areas. BU premodern position

The Department of World Languages and Literatures at Boston University invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position in premodern Chinese Literature before 1911, to begin July 1, 2023. The Harrison Ruffin Tyler Department of History and the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at William & Mary invite applications for a two-year, non-tenure-track visiting position in modern Chinese history and culture (field open) to begin August 10, 2023.

The successful applicant is expected to be an effective teacher and will have a 3-3 teaching load. Each semester two courses will be in History and one course will be in Chinese Studies for Modern Languages & Literatures. These courses include a survey of East Asian history since 1600, freshman seminars in the faculty member’s area of expertise, and upper-division courses in modern Chinese history, literature, and film taught in English.

An Wang Postdoc Fellowships 2023-24

The Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University is pleased to announce the 2023-2024 competition for the An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowships in Chinese Studies. Applications from all academic disciplines are welcome for the 2023-24 application cycle. The application deadline is January 17, 2023.

Two postdoctoral fellow positions are available. During the one-year fellowship, each fellow will be expected to pursue their own research, be in residence in the Cambridge/Boston area, and contribute to Fairbank Center programs. Research topics may cover contemporary China or focus on any historical period. Priority will be given to candidates working in the humanities or social sciences; however, we also welcome applications from scholars in other fields. Priority will be given to applicants who are planning to work with specific Harvard faculty members.

The one-year fellowship period is from August 1, 2023, to July 31, 2024.  An Wang Fellows are expected to reside in the Greater Boston area for the duration of the fellowship.

This fellowship is enabled by the acuity of vision and generosity of Mr James Lee, a University of Sydney alumnus now based in Hong Kong. The purpose of this gift is to establish and support the Sydney China Distinguished Fellowship Program within the Discipline of Chinese Studies in the School of Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. In collaboration with the China Studies Centre, the Program will appoint one or more Distinguished Fellows each year.

Distinguished Fellows must be employed at or affiliated with a university or research organisation other than the University of Sydney. They should have an outstanding record of research and a willingness to work with staff at the University of Sydney. Preference will be given to academics engaged in research on Chinese Culture, Chinese Literature, or translation studies.

UBC position

Lecturer in Modern Chinese Literature and Cinema

The Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver campus) is accepting applications for the position of Lecturer in Modern Chinese Literature and Cinema, commencing July 1, 2023.

A full-time Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts is responsible for 24 teaching credits (i.e., eight 3-credit courses) annually, typically with a 3/3 load in the Winter sessions and 2 courses or one intensive 6-credit course in one of the Summer sessions. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in modern Chinese literature, culture, and cinema, primarily in English (ASIA-prefix content-based courses), and in Chinese (CHIN-prefix advanced language courses) as needed. The workload for this position also includes service assignments.

This is a full-time position, which entails a probationary first year. Lecturer positions are non-tenure track appointments, renewable for successive terms, subject to availability of funds and demonstration of excellence in teaching and service, in accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association.

NYU Shanghai position

NYU Shanghai – Director of Chinese Language position

NYU Shanghai invites applications for the position of Director of Chinese Language. This primarily administrative position has responsibility for overseeing the continuous development of the Chinese language program, with particular attention to curricular development, course assessment, instructional design, pedagogical training, and recruitment of relevant faculty. The Director may also be asked to teach up to two courses per academic year under the auspices of the Global China Studies academic area.

We seek candidates who have completed a Ph.D. or Ed.D in Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Chinese Language and Literature, or other closely related disciplines. We prefer candidates with at least six years of Chinese language teaching experience to English-speaking students at the college level. We are especially looking for someone who has prior experience in program development, professional training, and can bring consistent scaffolding to especially third-year Chinese and beyond as well as coherence to each of the levels.

The Chinese language program at NYU Shanghai currently has twenty-two full-time instructors, who offer eighty language courses to approximately six hundred students annually. Uniquely situated in the heart of Shanghai, it is embedded in an immersive language learning environment with community engagement, field trips, and summer study-away programs. One half of the undergraduate student body of 2000 students is Chinese and one half comes from the rest of the world; all students who are not native speakers of Chinese are required to take at least two years of Chinese language study.
