The position should be filled as soon as possible. Depending on the qualifications of the appointee, the professorship will take the form of a tenured full or associate professorship, or an assistant professorship with tenure track.
The focus of the chair to be filled lies on the Chinese-speaking world, in particular the People’s Republic of China and its rapidly growing international importance as a cultural, political and economic actor. Based on a high competence in original language sources, the appointee is expected to be capable of integrating cultural and social science aspects of contemporary Chinese studies into their research and teaching.
A PhD in Sinology/Chinese Studies completed at the time of application, or in a social science discipline, as long as equivalent China competencies can be proven, is required. Excellent skills in Modern Mandarin, as well as outstanding, internationally recognized research publications are a prerequisite. Relevant teaching experience, a track record in the acquisition of third-party funding, and academic administration skills are expected. Applicants are also required to show a pronounced readiness for scholarly cooperation in contexts of transdisciplinary research and teaching, both within the University of Zurich and with national and international partners, and a willingness to engage with civil society. The future incumbent is expected to teach courses in German and English within three years of starting the position.
