Chongqing University Positions

The Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Chongqing University invites applications for tenure-track positions at the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. The recruitment of Professors is open all year round and will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Applicants for Assistant and Associate Professors should specialize in the following areas:

Literary Theory: applicants should work on foundational aspects of literary theory, such as Marxist literary theory, literary psychology, narratology, stylistics, the sociology of literature, the history of literary and artistic ideas, etc. We are especially interested in candidates who work across Western and Chinese literary theoretical traditions.

Modern Chinese Literature: we seek applicants specializing in Chinese literature of the 1940s and 50s, focusing on topics including but not limited to the people’s literature and art, important writers, literary movements, literary paradigm shifts, Chinese literature in a global context, etc. Candidates with expertise in literary criticism will be preferred.

Linguistics: applicants should work on modern Chinese Linguistics or Comparative Linguistics, and may specialize in areas including but not limited to modern Chinese grammatology, historical comparative linguistics, classical philology, lexicography, general linguistics, etc. We are especially interested in candidates whose work spans classical Western languages and Central Asian languages.

Classical Chinese Literature: We seek candidates specializing in Ming-Qing Chinese fiction from the perspective of East Asian literature.

Comparative Literature: We seek candidates with research interests in European literature and the history of thought since the early modern era. Candidates may specialize in areas such as romance philology, German literature, the long eighteenth century, modernism, etc. Applicants should demonstrate substantial work with original-language materials and have experience teaching literature courses in English. (Associate Professor only)

Notes: 1) Candidates capable of teaching Chongqing University’s core humanities “Great Books” Courses will be preferred. 2) Proficiency in Chinese is required.
