Reviews

Shengqing Wu and Xuelei Huang, eds., Sensing China: Modern Transformations of Sensory Culture
by Paolo SANTANGELO

MING QING STUDIES is an interdisciplinary and peer-reviewed yearly publication, both online and in print, edited by Paolo Santangelo.

Ming Qing Studies features original research articles on the social, cultural and intellectual history of late imperial China, spanning disciplines as varied as philology, literature, historiography, religion, geography, art and semiotics, political and social sciences, gender studies, and philosophy. Although the publication has a distinctive focus on China’s Ming and Qing dynasties, its scope is broadened to reflect the overall development of East Asia as a geo-cultural region and other localities with a significant Chinese presence during this fundamental period of transition from regional to global history. Past issues have occasionally covered also the history of borderland minorities, Japan and the Korean Peninsula, the Chinese-speaking communities in Southeast Asia, as well as the history of Sino-Western cultural exchanges.

Peer-review statement. All articles are subjected to initial editorial screening and blind peer- review. Provided that the peer-review proceeds with no delay and the scrutiny of our experts confirms the scientificity, scholarly soundness and academic value of the author’s work, it is one of Ming Qing Studies’ commitments to publish the submitted manuscript within one year after its formal acceptance. This would ensure a timely circulation of the author’s research findings without imposing hard limits on word counts or compromising the quality of peer- review, which, for publications in the same field, is usually much longer. The average article length is 6.000-8.000 words, but long articles, research notes and book reviews on recently published scholarship are also taken into consideration. Contributions by early-career scholars are particularly welcome.

MING QING STUDIES – MONOGRAPHS

Monographs is a new spin-off series that was launched in 2018 and is published as a supplement to Ming Qing Studies. Titles in this series may be specialized works by an individual author or essay collections on any topic of scholarly interest or aspect of Chinese society and culture in the late imperial period. While the selected topics or aspects often deal with late imperial China, they may also be about other East Asian societies and cultures. Published volumes may be revised Ph.D. theses. Mini-monographs, research reports, and occasional papers of length comprised between 20,000 and 60,000 words are also considered for publication. The two volumes published so far are respectively a revisitation of Pu Songling’s collection “Liaozhai zhiyi” (2018), and a study on martyrdom with a focus on Naqshbandi-Jahriyya Sufism (2020) .
